Small DVD-player to match aTV2?

I found my old DVD-collection, but my DVD-player broke about five years ago and I can't really be bothered with ripping all of the movies. So I'm thinking I might as well buy a new DVD-player to connect to the TV.

But when I'm browsing the web, all I find is those really wide DVD-players. It's like they haven't changed one bit since the last ten years... What I'm looking for is something really small and discrete, like an external Superdrive.

How many are there, really does not take that long to rip and encode. If you have an iOS device (iPhone or iPad) you can use airplay to play the ripped file without encoding.

If I were you, I'd still consider ripping your DVD-collection at a leisurely pace (set one before you go to work and go to bed, perhaps). It won't take too long that way, and then you won't have to worry about needing a DVD player in the future. But it's still your choice I was in your shoes once, but a few months later and my DVD collection is collecting dust (well, not literally) in my closet.

As far as DVD players are concerned, I'd be really surprised if one the size of the superdrive would exist in the near future... there's a lot that goes into those devices aside from the drive. Anyway, I always see this one at wal-mart. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Magnavox-MDV2100-F7-DVD-Player-Piano-Black/14521332. I think it would fit the bill, much like the Coby recommended above.

I found that one too, but it can't be the smallest player on the market? Maybe there's loads of stuff that needs to go into a DVD-player - I have no idea - but when the smallest DVD-player is bigger than an Mac Mini, it feels like something isn't right Thanks though

Well, the biggest problem isn't really time. I found that Handbrake rips a DVD into an iTunes-compatible format in about an hour on my laptop. What bugs me is that it doesn't work for all of the movies. Scarface for instance gets all choppy, green lines, blocks, the sound is bad and so on, but plays perfectly in both VLC and the DVD Player-app. Why a movie plays perfectly in VLC but can't be ripped by VLC's codecs through Handbrake is beyond me... I've tried all the settings I can think of and about every DVD ripping program I've come across.

So it's not pure laziness

Use the ATV 2 preset in handbrake and all should be well.

To rip my DVD's i have used Ripit, has worked very well (yes even on scarface)

Once handbrake has done it's thing i use Identify to tag them and place them into my iTunes library (which i keep on a OWC Firewire Ext Drive). Took me about 4 months to run through my 500 DVD collection.

Funny you should say that. A friend of mine told me about Ripit yesterday, and I was just about to update this thread by letting anyone else who encounters this problem know that it works like a charm
