Small IMAP on iPhone question

I understand that setting IMAP on the client s basically reproducing
the web interface and that messages are not completely downloaded. Am
I right?
Does it mean that my client will not download several hundreds of MB
of emails and eat up the memory of my phone?

In fact i was wondering what exactly is downloaded before setting up GMail
IMAP on a phone

i have gmail imap, and all it downloads are the inbox, and then has a list of folders that are the ones you have on gmail. It only downloads from all mail the number that you tell it to under the settings. I have it at 25, and it doesn't take too long.

Oh OK that's pretty cool, I was afraid it would suck up my phone data bandwidth. No the downside is that if i want to look for a particular that I received 3 months ago, I 'll have to go to the web interface...
Anyway, can't wait for Nov 29 th to grab my iPhone over here in France. Thanks for your reply

You don't have to worry about SPAM...

but as a precaution I always dump my SPAM on my Mac Pro on a daily basis.
