I'm running OS 8.5.1 here at school, and a special java application for students to take the practice exams requires Internet Explorer. I goto download IE for OS 8 from Mactopia, and they have .sit and .hqx formats available only.. only problem: 8.5.1 doesn't have Stuffit or any other expander (not these systems at least)

I goto download the older Stuffit Expander to open these formats, and THEY come in .sit and .hqx TOO!
How can I do this?!

Thanks!

If you have the installer CDs for the OS it Stuffit should be on there. Otherwise you'll have to find someone with the CDs. And while your at it tell them to upgrade the machines to 8.6 - it was a free upgrade after all :p !

Like I said, IE isn't on the systems.. the whole reason I need Stuffit is so I can expand IE and use it!

I don't have the Mac OS 8 discs (or any other version but OS X) and I don't know anyone who does.

Whoops, sorry, missed that part.

Are there any browsers installed on these computers? The instructions from the link in my last post can be adapted for other browsers. Eg for Netscape the following should work (adapted from http://www.game-revolution.com/download/mac/utilities/stuffit_expander.htm):
1. Choose 'General Preferences...' from Navigator's Options menu.
2. In the row of tabs that appears, click the 'Helpers' tab.
3. In the scrolling list on the 'Helpers' panel, scroll down until you see "Macintosh BinHex Archive" in the left-most column.
4. Double-click on "Macintosh BinHex Archive."
5. In the bottom part of the "Edit Type" window that appears, change the 'Handled By' preference from 'Application' to 'Navigator.'
6. Click the 'OK' button.
7. Download StuffIt Expander from http://www.stuffit.com/cgi-bin/stuffit/stuffit_loginpage.cgi?standardmacexp (one that ends in .hqx)
