Does the Smart keyboard not cover the back of the ipad pro? If so do I have to get something else to protect it? What have other people done?

Yes, you'll have to buy a back cover that's if you want to protect the back.

I didn't buy the Smart Keyboard.. I have a Bluetooth keyboard already & I just got the Smart Cover. I don't have a back cover though.

I picked up the MoKo frosted back cover for my 12.9" Pro. It's nice - and much cheaper than Apple's back. The only thing I'd say is that if I put it on sloped desks in lecture theatres it does slide - so I carry an old fashioned eraser to keep the iPad Pro in place.
