I recently went to the Genius Bar to have my new iPhone 4S looked at because of a software bug that has persisted even though I set up the 4S as a "new phone". Ever since I upgraded to iOS 5 I have had issues with the Music app and Smart Playlists. I use a 3000 song "Recently Added" Smart Playlist to fill my phone with music. However, ever since iOS 5, there is a 5-10 second lag when I tap on the Recently Added playlist (i.e. the playlist remains selected and blue and the Music app hangs for a bit before opening the playlist). In addition, when you try to play a song from the playlist it also hangs for a similar amount of time before starting to play. The Genius just said that the phone is searching through all of the songs on my phone and populating the Smart Playlist when you click on it, so that's why it lags, but that response didn't seem totally right to me. I never had this issue on my older 3GS with iOS 3 or 4 with the exact same Smart Playlist.

Has anyone else had this issue? Does iOS 5 handle Smart Playlists differently that the previous iOS releases?

Also, annoyingly, if you press the home button to get out of the Music app while it is hanging while opening the Smart Playlist, it generally causes the Music app to crash every time that you opening it subsequently. This behavior isn't fixed by a hard reset of the iPhone. Instead, you have to Reset All Settings (which I hate doing) in order to get it functioning again.

Because of they way that the Music app crashes in association with this Smart Playlist lagging, I figured that there has got to be a bug with iOS 5 and Smart Playlists. Right?
