Depends. Are you planning on buying the new one? Sure prices in the used market will fall but you won’t know the machine. This is a friend. You know him. Machine has been used twice per your knowledge. You’re getting iT for 725 which is what? 500 bucks off? Pretty good deal. If you’re planning on buying the older generation anyway you may not want to let this piece slip out of your hands.

What size? 10.5" or 12.9"?

I would recommend looking at the price and options for the current iPad Pros offered by Apple.com (MSRP) so you can estimate the price of a brand new 2018 iPP. Which storage tier do you plan on buying, will you be buying/using LTE?

For example, if you aren't planning on using LTE, you can get a brand new iPad Pro 10.5" (256 GB) for $799. If we assume that the prices stick for the 2018 models, I would spend the extra $75 to get a 2018 model or wait and get a WiFi 2017 model cheaper. Does that make sense?

No point in getting an LTE model if you won't be using LTE (if you see yourself probably using it in the near future, between now and your next upgrade, then it's safer to buy the LTE model since you might get some use from it -- but we can also tether so ...).

It’s 12.9 WiFi/cellular unlocked

That’s actually a great point. A 256 cellular 12.9 sounds great on paper at 750. Good discount. But do you really need it? What if a 11” WiFi only 256 meets your needs? What if the new base model is 128 with an upgrade to 512? A 11” non cellular should be at or about 750 usd.

And if you don’t really need the 12.9 or cellular and your use case can survive a 10.5 then a used or even new one will be way cheaper than 750.

Something to think about. May as welll wait at this point. I’ll change my advice. Tethering is So easy on iOS why bother with cellular?

To wait or not to wait? Totally an individual choice. Me personally? Even tho i could really use a new ipad right now...I’m waiting. We are close enough to an update to make it worth it for me.

Does everyone think stores will be heavily discounting and clearing out the current iPad Pro 10.5 after Sept. announcement?

$100? $200 off? I mean it's still a very capable iPad.

No point buying now when it’s so close. At least see what they’ve got in store, and then even if the older ones aren’t discounted you’ll be making a purchase in the full knowledge of what the newer one is like.

If history is any indication the answer is "no". I can't recall a time when iPads were discounted because a new model was announced. Apple's pricing plans have changed and allows places like Staples and Best buy to periodically offer significant deals on current iPad models. I bought my 1st gen 12.9 iPad Pro (while it was still the latest model) for $175 off.

If you are happy with what the current 10.5 offers and find a good deal, $125+ off, then I'd say go for it... with the caveat that if you're the type that will be upset that you missed out on 240 Hz refresh rate of the latest model, then.... wait.

That's a pretty good deal; even beating Apple Certified Refurb prices (which, in turn, is still cheaper than even the Academic discount from the Apple Online Store for Education). Apple Certified Refurb pricing is expected to go down a little bit following the release of new models, but I HIGHLY doubt they will go down THAT MUCH. (For reference, a 256GB 12.9" Second Generation iPad Pro with Cellular is $919.00 on the Apple Certified Refurbished iPad section of the Apple Online Store today.). I'd say it really comes down to whether getting a good deal on something is more important than getting something that is considered "current" for longer or vice versa. Similarly, if you have been following the rumor mill regarding what's next for the iPad Pro line-up (FaceID, smaller bezels; rounded display; mystery button on the back of the iPad that may or may not be TouchID; etc.) and you are excited or dreading said changes, that may or may not sway you one way or the other.

Sure. But if the new 10.5 is 11", you could get the 11" without cellular, base model for not much more than the one you're looking at.

I personally would take advantage of the iPad being sold to you with the price offered, being that the really is no expectation of iPads this year, which very well could be 2019. And if there is iPads this year, I think it won’t be until later until October or November at the earliest.

I'm wondering if, at that price, you could buy it from your friend and then recover most if not all of your purchase price by selling it, if you decide you have to have a new one when they come out.
Just a thought.

Sounds like a great deal. I agree with @Matz - if it's it's in excellent condition and has everything that came with it (i.e. the product box, cable and wall adapter) you could easily sell and recover the money.

You could also say you're interested but want to see what Apple announces in a couple weeks. If the friend's not in a hurry to sell, they might be nice and hold onto it a bit longer.

Best Buy has the 10.5 iPad Pro for $125 off right now for it's Labor Day sale! Plus an extra $50 off if you are a student.

To complicate your situation I’m almost positive that Apple is going to skip iPads in September and wait until an early-mid October iPad/Mac event. Personally, I think the new iPads are going to be amazing with the bezel-less design and FaceID and all that, so I would wait.

Any new info or just the ideas we’ve all been discussing?

I keep going back and forth. It’s a big event. A “one more thing” at the round building would be cool. That’s either a redesigned iPad Pro or a round Apple Watch. A new laptop ? Meh. Makes more sense to push a new laptop, lower mB prices and Mac mini : iMac updates to a seeperate OSX event.

I’m in the same boat.. for me spending $600+ on an iPad again isn’t something i want to do. Sure new one might be great with new bells and whistles but for me snagging a deal (less than $400) for a current iPad Pro 10.5 would be better fit for me. If i was buying new/in store, I’d wait..

I keep going back and forth too, and truthfully I’m hoping that the iPads come in September, but if I were to predict they were coming then they definitely wouldn’t. ;)

The way I see it, the iPhone, iPad, Watch and AirPods are all products they want you to upgrade this year. And they’re all companion devices to one another. I believe that the phone and watch would steal both the marketing and consumer-pocketbook ‘spotlight’ if they announced the tablets at the same time. In other words, they want you to buy a $800+ phone, $350+ watch, $130+ AirPods, $130+ AirPower mat, all of which are pretty much confirmed, and they’re going to throw a $600+ tablet out there at the same time? Unlikely. If they defer it until October, along with the new Macs they have to announce, then consumers are more likely to have forgotten a little bit about how much they spent on phones and watches in September. New month, new budget! Previously they have announced the 12.9” Pro alongside the phones, but that was a different situation because it wasn’t releasing until November. And they couldn’t repeat that strategy now because they have Pros currently on the market which would have their sales cannibalized.

We shall see, I for one would be ecstatic and readily willing to throw money at all of those products at once, but I believe they would expect a bigger burst in iPad launch day sales if they waited until early-mid October.
