SMB Bug ?

Hi Guys ,

not sure if anyone else is having the same problem I am , I have shared a Plex folder on my Studio, so my partner can put Shows directly into the folder over the network , but it seems SMB is not working , windows 11 is constantly asking for a password, when the password is correct.

I had no issues with this on Ventura, but suddenly in this beta I get this problem.. anyone have an idea for a fix ?

Yes, I think there is a bug. In the Sharing settings menu, the option to allow Windows file sharing doesn't stick. I can tick the check box against my account name, confirm with my password and click "done", but if I then go back into the menu, the box is unchecked again. This has been persistent through all the public betas so far despite my reporting it through feedback. With every annual OS update there seem to be different glitches with "old fashioned" file sharing, some of which are never really fully resolved. I suppose we're all supposed to be AirDropping stuff or accessing it via "the cloud" and good ol' simple file sharing is considered somewhat archaic. No ideas for a fix I'm afraid :-(

Nice to know someone else is also have the same issue and I’m not crazy 😂, hopefully Apple will fix this in later betas, if they don’t I will have to roll back to Ventura , which will be a gigantic pain in the butt 😂

Still not fixed in the latest Public Beta. I have a bad feeling about this...
Everything else is looking really good too 🙄

Unfortunately I think it's just a low priority for them. They know they still have to provide it but all their effort is thrown behind the shiny new bells and whistles and things like this get pushed to the back of the queue.

Actually just noticed, the SMB bug is now both ways, last beta i could connect to my partners Windows machine No issues , now i can no longer connect as password is always wrong…. For Christ sake Apple, you need to sort this, i discontinued my server to use my Studio as my machine which is powered on all the time.

That's not changed for me, I can sill connect TO Windows computers without issue. Frustratingly, apart from that one tiny, obscure and potentially deal-breaking little checkbox, Sonoma is shaping up to be one of the best and most stable updates Apple has launched in a while. Grrr...

I had to disable password protected sharing in Windows 11 Network and Internet settings to get Sonama to see/access all my shared windows folders.

I see apple didn't bother to fix this ! I still can't connect my partners windows machine to connect to the studio. no matter what happens the windows machine trying to connect to the Mac just gives a the username or password is incorrect...

this is incredibly frustrating

The bug is still present on the MacBook Pro I originally updated through the beta phase but I've subsequently updated three more Macs with the public release version and they are all behaving correctly, I can connect to all of them from Windows without issue. I don't know why the one machine is still misbehaving; if I can find the time I might try a full reload to see if that fixes it.

I just wanted to let you know that using any part of the Apple GUI for transferring/copying files skips some files! In particular, using AirDrop, Drag-n-Drop, Copy-n-Paste, and Universal Control all skip certain file names. In addition, and surprisingly, the Apple "tar" command also skips the same file names when making archives. (I haven't tested it, but I suspect Time Machine may do likewise.)

On the other hand, Homebrew's "gtar" (Gnu tar) does not skip any files when making tar archives, and the "rsync" command also transfers/copies all filenames.

...just thought you should know that you may not want to rely solely on Apple's GUI for transferring/copying files.

My Windows PCs are all running up-to-date Windows 11 but, unless that option is checked, they won't recognise the Mac password. Hence the problem I have with the one Mac where that option no longer works. The only difference in setup between that Mac and all the others is the lack of that option and that's the only one I can't connect to.

So, I came across this thread the other day because I was experiencing the same issue on a clean install of Sonoma. I wanted to share my experience to help anyone else out that comes across this!

Here's what I found:

At this point, there's a check in the box - closing out of System Settings and reopening it, the GUI shows unchecked. Which tracks because the log says the user was removed.

Curious, I opened Windows File Sharing again...
Put a check in the box, authenticate - Operation: Remove User
Instead of closing out, I removed the check in the box - Console shows Operation Add User
I then closed out of System Settings, reopened and looked at Windows File Sharing.
The box is checked and my user can connect to the SMB share.

Give this a try and see if you guys get the same results.

Hi, yes this has worked for me! Thank you so much for sharing this. I can't profess to understanding what's going on here but it's great to have a solution. Hopefully a proper fix will be in the pipeline soon (maybe even 14.1?).

My boss put on the latest Sonoma beta on his test setup and it seems to have been fixed there.

Wish Apple put more attention to (among a lot of other things) File Sharing. We still use mac minis as File Servers at a lot of our clients...shame it's gone down the toilet.

For me this bug has finally been fixed in 14.1, my partner can connect to my studio no issues anymore ♥️
