I hope this is the right section for this question. I have had a problem with my iMac overheating and shutting down. Some searches led me to SMC Fan Control, which is supposed to allow me to control the fan speed.

The problem is, when I install this program I can't seem to use it. The icon is on my desktop, but nothing happens when I click on it. Yet if I try to trash it, I get the message that it can't be put in the trash because it's open.

I am using an iMac OS 10.6.8 with an Intel processor, so it should meet the requirements.

Does anyone know if there's any trick to making this program work? Thanks in advance.

You need to drag the SMC app into your app folder perhaps. Also it sounds like you cannot trash it because it is mounted. Try rebooting.

I use iStat menus for that sort of stuff like monitoring heat issues. It costs but is very good.

Thanks, but it turned out that it did install after all. It was showing in a very small space at the top of my screen that I didn't see at first.

This program didn't solve my problem anyway, which was crashing from overheating. Right now my Mac is being repaired and a new fan is being installed.

After that, I don't know if that program will even be needed as the fan should control the temps.
