Hello,

My MacBook Pro A1708 won’t wake up from sleep after closing and opening up the lid. The Keyboard lights up and the touchpad clicks but the screen stays black. The only way to get it to show a picture is to reset the smc. (I actually don’t have to hold the keys for 10s). If I do so it goes straight to the login screen without the booting apple logo.

When I shut it down completely it won’t start without resetting the smc. (I have to hold the keys for 10s)

I’ve already tried resetting the nvram and disabling hibernate and sleep mode. I’ve reinstalled macOS.

When I connect the charger the problem seems to occur not that often but still sometimes.

Battery has 600 cycles and seems to be in normal condition according to apples system report.

The problem still occurs even with the battery completely disconnected from the board and the MacBook only running on the external power supply.

One thing I noticed is that sometimes when the screen stays black the backlight of the screen just didn't light up. With the help of a flashlight I can log in without problems. Sometimes I can't see anything on the screen even with a flashlight.

If i connect an external monitor an this point, the macbook seems to work fine but the internal monitor is not recognized by the system. After a reboot, everything ist fine again.

What could cause this problem?

Thank you!

"Do you expect us to go look up "A1708" before trying to help you?"

Off-topic reply follows.

This seems to be a common thing with users from Europe, or otherwise "outside the USA and Canada".

Instead of reporting what they have with "which Mac" + "year made" (such as "MacBook Pro, 2019", they give you the "model identifier" from system information. Makes it much harder to tell which one they're talking about, unless one does a search as did jav6454, above...
