Greetings,

I got my Macbook on tuesday, and I was impressed. With bluetooth accidentally turned on (as well as airport) the Macbook lasted for about 4.5 hours. I then discovered the dreaded moo. It didn't bother me that much but I figured that as the SMC update was showing good reviews I should update my Macbook. Now the fans are very loud most of the time and due to the low-volume of the Macbook it is sometimes hard to hear things, I am not kidding. The fans seem to turn on randomly, even when the Macbook is turned off! Now the battery (without bluetooth turned on) just doesn't last as long, presumably due to the fans. It lasts about 3 hours, which is kinda bad considering this started on wednesday.

Do you think I should call Apple?

EDIT: Sometimes now, the battery icon changes so that there is an X in the middle, signifying no available battery, and then the Macbook turns off a few minutes later. What's up with that?

The problem with the battery does not sound relevant to the SMC update. Try a PMU reset and see if it insists.
As for the fan issue, the update is actually supposed to have the fans running all the time at a stable speed (which also exlains why your battery runs faster out) so that your macbook does not get overheated. I am not sure if you can downgrade the firmware to the original one, after a short look at the web didnt find anything helpful, maybe you can give it a try. But be aware, downgrading firmware is not always as safe as upgrading, and does not mean also that it will fix all issues

Were you in the South Shore apple store today? I think so, seeing as the woman in the store had the same problem. I'm the one with the blackberry. That "genius" couldn't figure out my computer either, and basically said, "you're screwed." Fun.
