sms backup

Does itunes or iphone support some form of backing up sms.It would be great to have that feature.
I know that itunes backs up iphone occasionally and im assuming the sms get backed up too.

But to organize or see all my sms on screen n save them etc would be nice.

I thought it did, but when I used my back up for a new iphone the messages didn't transfer.

yes it did happen to me once before but wasnt sure if there was something new out that would take care of sms off iphone.

Is there away to extract the sms so that it can be organized etc
maybe an app or software todo it.
I did see one online

I just received a new iphone and restored it from my backup. This time the sms were included. The only difference this past time was that I didn't need to upgrade the firmware before I restored the new phone.
