Looked at the vids and the such, and the SMS feature on the iPhone looks very much like iChat. I will admit that I have only had a few SMS messages from someone that I knew that had my phone number. Never sent one (was not on a SMS plan - so I wanted to avoid extra charges). I have done "tons" of IM's to iChat/AIM and YIM via my iMac or my PB/MacBook.

So just how does SMS work with my "buddies" on iChat/AIM and YIM? Do I need to get their phone numbers? Or will their ID's on each service work?

Anyone know?

it's not connected to im services at all. completely separate services. sms only works from phone to phone

apple just made it look like that to give it a more 'conversation' like feel.

...Although some cell phone carriers have mobile IM apps and bill you the same rate as SMS messages. So as far as billing is concerned, the two are treated the same.

I'm not sure if the iPhone has this capability or how it will be billed.

i think he was asking if he would be able to talk to his friends while they are connected to AIM or YM. If so, the answer is definitely not. the services are completely separate.

actually its quite easy to txt someones cell phone from aim, or vice versa

to txt someone from aim, you open an IM and put + and then the 10 digit number. and from the phone you put in a txt message you put in a persons screen name then a colon, then the message and send it to

ok. i know this. but it's not connected the the im service. the iphone's text message app will not handle your im buddy list. it's not instant messaging. nevermind. i'm over this.

Ok all, thanks for the replies so far.... BUT....

Lets say I met a "hottie" in some chat room or via email....

With SMS, how would I send an SMS from the iPhone using my iChat/AIM or YIM account - WITHOUT "officially" revealing my phone number?

I am trying to grasp the differences between the iPhone and the chat capabilities offered on some Windows Mobile phones and the likes of the Helio Ocean...

like i said. they're completely different. this is not possible. you can't use your screen name from your phone to chat with someone on instant messenger. you can send them a text message from your phone number to their screen name and vice versa.

p.s. if your meeting 'hotties' in 'chat rooms' you should really get away from 1999 and get out more...

Thanks, if I understand your post - the only way to use "names" from iChat/AIM and YIM is to use a cell phone that supports AIM and/or YIM messaging.

Thanks for the understanding... but I have only AIM'd or YIM's from a desktop... was wondering about what the SMS feature might mean for me if I were to go to the iPhone....

correct. currently the iPhone is not slated to have an actual iChat app. this could be added later or you may be able to use meebo.com in the mean time.

LOL... it was my attempt at humor....

Poorly taken in this context...

But given my job and my exposure to possible miss use of sharing my phone number for other deeds, I was wondering about the SMS feature of the iPhone.

I did share an SMS with someone I thought I could trust, only had to turn it over to the police to get it to stop. Never had that issue with iChat/AIM or YIM.I could always choose to ignore those types of IM's - and felt a relative safety behind a screen name I could always delete if needed (never had to so far).

I may have dealt with computers and the internet in my sales job - but the integration to the cell phone leaves me lost....
