SMTP mail problem (Only on the iPhone, not on my mac)

Has anyone seen this behavior?

I have an IMAP account (on Exchange) and I successfully use mail.app without problems.

Now, I have transferred my mail settings from mail.app to my iphone via iTunes sync.

I can now recieve mail, but I cannot send mail. I get authentication errors for my smtp server. Very frustrating as I have checked and doublechecked my settings

ie, username/password are fine, server addy is fine (including port appended to the smtp address: smpt.example.company.com:587)

any ideas??

I have been getting smtp failure messages for ever with my imap account (aol) Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't all settings are correct and this issue is with both firmwares the latest and the previous one.

Incoming always works its outgoing that is the issue

Any one else having smtp failure messages ?

i think you need to set the smtp server as your mobile phone operator - i'm on T-mobile so i use the t-mobile smtp server. Outgoing mail is fine.

Essentially correct. Any decent mail and\or Exchange admin will not allow SMTP relaying. When you are using your iPhone via AT&T's EDGE network, your IP is not part of your companies network, so your companies SMTP server, [Exchange or otherwise], considers it a relay attempt and will not allow it.

Until we get true Exchange Active Sync, you must use an SMTP server that will allow it to be used even though you are not on its network, [which probably means either it supports authentication, or, maybe a freebie service]...

I am on Cingular\AT&T, and until we get true Exchange Active Sync, I use the following SMTP server that is hosted by Cingular\AT&T.

NOTE: It will fail via Wi-Fi, as even they have anti-spam tactics that require you use it via EDGE, since that is a network they control.

Yes, I know, that is not a FQDN, rather a domain name, but trust me, it works. They probably setup a DNS Zone with an IP pointing to their [single?] host...
