Yeah I think next year will be a good one for Android phones in general. This chip should be a big factor in that.

Snapdragon needs to start offering longer support. From what I understand, that's one of the main reasons Android phones have a pitiful 2/3 year lifespan of support. I know it will never be 5/6 like Apple, but it's sad that people who own a note 8 may be left out from here on out, even though the phone itself could easily run another 1 or 2 versions of Android. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a lot of that is due to the chips not being supported past 2 years. I know it's not iOS where there are not a boatload of different phones, but it would be nice to get more.

If they had project treble when they shipped, which sadly excludes S8, it should be easier. Monthly updates are now timely and regular. And 10 has been getting released.

I don’t miss my S7. Predicting the future is just tea leaves for pundits.

Starting next year the new 865 chipset will be updatable through the android play store so it can be regularly updated. That’s one of the big new things for next year.

If you read you would see that one of the features is that all 865 chips have 5g onboard. So every flagship next year will be a 5g device unless the manufacturer disables it for some reason.

Every article I’ve read says exactly the opposite. The 865 doesn’t have 5G onboard—Qualcomm is just requiring that OEMs have to also purchase the separate X55 modem.

I should have clarified, it’s not integrated but yes Qualcomm is forcing all paired modems to be 5G. It’s essentially the same thing for the end user. They’re just leveraging their dominant position in the market to get the phone manufacturers to buy another piece of hardware from them.

Gotcha. IIRC, their 765 chip does have an integrated 5G modem. My concern is that they could not integrate their 5G modem with the 865 due to thermal and/or power concerns and thus, if a phone utilizes this combo, it better have a damn big battery.

Will certainly be interesting to see how well these chips perform in real world usage.

That could explain why the Galaxy S11+ battery being rumoured to being as large as 5000mAh.

Samsung Galaxy S11+ to sport a 5,000 mAh battery

5G paired with the rumored high refresh display. The battery would have to be huge.

I am starting to wonder if these rumours are not running a little too wild. Samsung do like to throw in the kitchen sink, but not this heavily. Oooor the S11+ 5G will have some sort of Pro model variant with everything in it and come in at $1300 or something.

This is why I hate rumours, they run far too wild and the real thing ends up not living to all of them

I just don’t think Samsung feels it’s going to worth it to invest that much in the premium segment, I think they will feel the 5G will bring the crowd in and the Camera capabilities will then set them apart from the competition.

I think they’ll go big on the camera this year. If they can’t match Google and Apple on the computational side, they’ll load up on specs.

High refresh is the wildcard for me. In 2020 it’s one of the things that’s a must for me and I think will be in a lot of flagships. But I could actually see Samsung hold high refresh rate for the Note series. They have to hold something back.

Absolutely! Exactly my thoughts!

I also believe they will hold on the refresh rate for the Note series, they need to hold something back.

I get the feeling that Samsung and Apple will be the only ones without High Refresh Rate Displays in 2020, both of them still want to ensure they give the best battery life with as little compromise as possible, they’ll focus more on Camera, 5G and Battery Life.

865 is going to be a huge one next year.

But the price will also be big to boot, no more $700 OnePlus Pros etc.

2020 is the year Android flagships become premium once again, and probably even more Apple-priced.
