OK so i'm at work and browsing through iPhone Q&A (yeah i know, i should be working). But anywho, did anyone else notice that Apple is being very very vague about using other sim cards and unlocking the phone?

Can I use the SIM card from my current mobile phone?

AT&T is the exclusive wireless carrier for iPhone in the United States. If you currently use another wireless carrier, you can choose to transfer your number when you activate your AT&T account.

This makes me wonder...
 
In one of the review round-ups it was stated t-mobile SIM cards would not work...I don't know why that was even attempted. I'm sure Apple isnt going to stop you from trying, but I'm willing to bet that opening up the iPhone will probably terminate the warranty.
 
Well they're probably going to make allowances for people who already have AT&T SIMs...ie if I wanted to buy an iPhone i'd like it if I could use my cingular SIM, which has all the contacts and my phone number from my current phone.

No siree, contacts will be transfered from Address Book. I made a contact card for each contact I want on my iPhone in Address Book so they'll sync over. Phone number will be handled through the activation process in iTunes. To understand how this works I suggest watching the Activation & Sync guided video on Apple.com

What if you don't have a mac or a phone that works with the computer? Eh? I'm about to watch the video...maybe that'll answer my question.

Well, legally, the DMCA explicitly permits people to unlock their phones but does not require the OEM to provide a means. So it would be inappropriate for Apple to tell you that you may not unlock your phone, since you are explicitly granted this right. They just don't have to help you. ;)
 
first off the sim card is not internal so u dont need to open the phone. the sim is in a tray that slides out like the apple remote battery. second, couldnt you put the sim in and then sync it, so it would take the contacts on your sim and put them in address book, because when you add contacts on the go it puts them in address book next time you sync

After reading around this board about the SIM card issue...I really have no idea anymore. Nothing Apple nor AT&T has said has pointed towards being able to just switch out our own SIMs from our existing Cingular/AT&T phones. I was under the assumption that because the iPhone guide only gave the option of Address Book syncs or entering them directly into the iPhone one-by-one that our SIM cards with our contacts and such are unusable once we put our hands on the iPhone...who the hell knows...We'll find out in 50+ hours I guess...

All I've seen is this:

"Current GoPhone customers need to activate their iPhones on a new account with a new phone number, however, and existing customers cannot swap out SIM cards to use the iPhone straight away. AT&T is also offering a 14-day return policy for iPhones, but requires that customers return the device to the original point of purchase. A 10 percent restocking fee is charged unless the phone is returned unopened and in its original shrink wrapping."


And from the official FAQ:

Q. I'm an existing customer. Can I swap out my current SIM card and start right away?
A. No. iPhone must be activated befroe it can be used. iPhone includes a pre-installed SIM card for your convenience.

You heard 'em, "iPhone must be activated befroe it can be used."! ;)

but after it is activated couldnt you take out the sim card, put in the one with your contacts, sync it once to get the contacts on your comp, and then put your good sim back in and sync the phone to get the contacts back on there

Hopefully, for some users.

I was able to sync my Motorola to Address Book on the Mac. If you're unable to sync to Address Book, I think you could try syncing to a PC and save the file as one that Address Book can import on your Mac.

yeah true, it doesnt really matter for me cus i already have all contacts in address book and i dont even have a sim card now
 
An At&t rep I just spoke with said you can't move the Sim to another phone. Take it with a grain of pepper, but that would really be stinky news.
