15" Macbook Pro, 2007, Intel Core Duo, Snow Leopard.
Experienced a major crash, with black blotches appearing on screen. Now won't restart, or boot from install DVD. Safe Mode boot starts with fragmented image on screen, and seizes at "IPv6 pakect filtering initialized, default: to accept, logging disabled". Any ideas? The fact it won't start from DVD makes me think this isn't harddrive related. True?

As you suggest, this isn't hard drive related.

Sounds like more significant hardware failure. My guess is either GPU or memory failure.

If you have spare RAM on hand, try swapping that. If you have 2 RAM sticks in the machine, try removing one and see if you get further - if not, swap with the other one.

However, my guess is that there is something more seriously wrong with system board and you'll need to make a trip to apple for paid replacement (or do it yourself with parts obtained elsewhere).

Are you able to get the apple hardware test to run?

Thank you throAU!

No. Hardware test does not run. I'll try replacing the RAM as you've suggested.
