I finally decided to upgrade to 10.6 and when I put in the disk it never reads it just kicks it back out. Computer info in sig. I don't use the dvd player, is it possible that it is dead?

I did a restart and had all the apps off, wondering if I'm just doing something wrong.

Thanks for your help:)

I opened the dvd player app and put in a regular dvd but it treated it just the same as the SL disk.

Pop a DVD in an see if the drive works. Is this a retail DVD or did it come with another computer?

Yeah it's a brand new disk from the store this morning.

Different laser :(

Ah, figures.

There is no other way to check other than it just works or it doesn't?

Alternatives sound like take it to store for upgrade :)rolleyes:) or use an external dvd drive?

I searched through some "External DVD" threads, read up a bit, went out and picked up a drive (I/O Magic 8X), plugged it in and it works perfectly ~ ready to update.:D

"the application install mac os x cannot be used from this volume"

Not sure what the problem is~~dvd drive works, plays a dvd movie I put in, shows the opening screen for 10.6 but when I double click install the screen below is what I get. I've been googling around but some say I need a powered USB hub and another say it's a permissions thing...

***
I'll take this problem over to the OS X threads.

Optical Disc Rejection

I went through 4 Mac Minis that had this problem. They would not accept the discs most of the time, then they might or might not. Unpredictable. I spent many hours on the phone with Apple. Finally, someone offered me an "appeasement" upgrade of a new 3.06 Mghz iMac. I accepted after a month and a half of huge headaches. I've had two previous Mac Minis and many Apple computers but never this many problems. It's like a toaster that won't accept bread. The iMac is cool tho I not too sure about Snow Leopard yet. Many things crash.
