Snow Leopard to Tiger Firewire Drive

Hi

I had trudged through the search on the forum, but I cannot get a definative answer to:

Can a 10.6.1 mac, link to an external drive (firewire or USB) on a mac running 10.4.11?

Depends on the Mac, your question isn't clear enough to know that.

Do you mean booting from an external drive?

If you have an Intel Mac it will most probably work with a Firewire or USB drive. Press down the "option/alt" key during boot up, and you can select from which drive you want to start the Mac.

If you have a PPC Mac it won't work, as SL is Intel-only.


Or do you mean some kind of network?

That will only work with a direct Firewire connection, without any drive in between. USB won't work.

Really sorry, yes your right I have been a big vague!

What I mean is I have an iMac 2.66 Intel Core 2 duo running 10.6.1 & I want to mount external drives (Firewire & USB) that are connected to a PPC G5 running 10.4.11 that is on my (ethernet) Lan.

Hope I have been a bit clearer & thanks for your swift reply.

In Tiger > System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing. http://macs.about.com/od/networking/qt/sharingtiger.htm

In Snow Leopard > Finder > Network > look for your PPC machine and "Connect as" and type in your Tiger user and password.

That shall do the trick.

Thanks again for your reply, but no they do not seem compatible (the OS).
I have 4 machines linked through my network, but have since upgraded one to Snow Leopard.
Since then, this mac (10.6) cannot see the external drives linked to the G5 (mix of Firewire 800, 400, ESata & USB). These drives (external) hold all of my family's users accounts for iTunes, iPhoto, homework for my son & various data.
Before on Tiger as you kindly stated, this was easy & just a case of network prefs to the drive, but the problem seems to be 10.6 macs seeing these drives across the network.
A simple answer would be to network the drives from the newer system, but as my G5 tower has the FW800 & ESata adapters for the array of drives I have this is not possible.
