I personally still stand by my earlier assertions that a folding phone is a bad user experience ultimately, but I guess I will have to eat crow if Apple does end up making this happen.

Thoughts?
Apple releasing a folding iDevice does not negate your assertion.

Personally, I have no application for which a folding device would serve - and zero desire to own one.

So, one we go from a pundit saying they should, to you then saying they might?

Personally I'm seeing zero signs that this is anything other than just a pipe dream. Folding phones have yet to make any sort of impression on the industry, other than something to laugh at because of either build quality or high price, or or something that's only available in China.

Apple have been filing various filing patent updates for nigh on 10 years now and there's still absolute silence coming from Cupertino on the subject.

Meanwhile the longevity of the current devices is still in question, e.g. : https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/202...to-razr-durability-problems-begin-to-pile-up/

I love the idea of Foldables having used the Huawei Mate X and Galaxy Fold display unit, I love the idea and I can see the vision....

HOWEVER

Much like how Candy bar phones were the go to design for phones back in the 2000s, I see Slabs like the iPhone 11 Pro Max and Galaxy S20 Ultra, remaining mainstream while the Foldables will fill a niche of their own, maybe in corporate or just fill an enthusiast niche.

I could be wrong and I hope I am as I would love to see Foldables takeover and go mainstream, but I believe the cost of building a Slab with IP68 protection will forever be a lot cheaper and more user friendly for most than a Foldable.

But let’s wait and see.

Apple will do a folding phone under 2 conditions: if they can get it right (no cheapo plastic screen with a crease) and they think they can sell them.

Personally, I say I don’t want one now but if it offers compelling features (say, a larger screen plus an always on minor screen) who knows: it might be a good device and I will change my mind.

When it comes to the usability of folding phones, this video summarises it nicely.

I don’t see any scenario where I would prefer a folding phone. Happy to be proven wrong.

I’m not exactly dying for one but I can see how it could be neat. Think of it more like a tablet that you can easily carry with you everywhere. I wouldn’t mind having a full fledge ipad that I can fold and carry in my jean pocket. That’s pretty much where the idea for big phones (“phablets”) came from, making them foldable just takes it one step further.

I don’t feel like Apple will do foldable unless the screen technology gets better than what they are today. None of the foldable devices will ever last for 5 years, which’s Apple’s smartphone hardware benchmark at the moment.

If I could essentially have a phone and iPad mini in one ultra portable device, sign me up. That being said, I would still keep and utilize my iPad Pro daily.

I imagine it’s at least a few years away though.

would it replace my iPad? No as i use my iPad for work and at home but only would it work if the folded phone had the same features as the pro line.

I would consider one if it was structurally sound and didn't use some horrific plastic display. I would prefer something like the Z Flip, basically a normal phone, perhaps with a bigger display than normal (7ish inches) which folds to a small pocketable size. As opposed to some tablet thing like the galaxy fold.

If they could develop a hinge with a very thin line so as not to take away from the full viewing area. I don’t see any type of seamless bendable plastic screen worth a crap anytime soon.

Sometimes I think I miss my first flip phone. Then that remembrance is blown away with the next very slight breeze.

I’m totally open to new technology and expanding different products for consumers that are willing to spend the money to have something that they might find the convenience and functionality with a folding phone. I still question if this will actually happen, and I’d say were at least two years out before we see something like this, as Apple is notorious for delaying products that may not be ready for the masses.

John Prosser is fairly reliable, and he has had a good year behind Apple so far for the most part, but so much can change between now and if a foldable display launches. The only concern I have, isn’t Apple’s engineering standards making this product, [because that’s what they do so well], it’s the price point if it’s to the point if they get a little cocky, which We all know they have a tendency to do.
