The jury is still out. Initially, I don't care much for the new look. It's like someone at Apple decided it should really look more iOS like just for the sake of it, even if it meant a bunch of things you never use being right in your face all the time instead of buried in a menu. Could be better.

My two wishes are:

in 'my' tv shows, the show title is in the list, then you see seasons. I hate seeing all the seasons of every show.

in 'my' movies, I'd like the option to view by grid (artwork) like apple does when you are looking for a movie to buy. All mine are one big list.

I'm not holding my breath.

Still think the ATV1 interface is better, because my own media is intergrated right into the main menus. The new ATV3 interface looks too much like an iPhone/iPod and not like a home theater device.

I'll second that. I really don't like seeing all the seasons in the main list.

This is the first step. Making all the selections on the main menu look like apps, it will be easy to add apps in the future. My bet is that an incarnation of iOS 6 will run on the Apple TV and allow apps.

Yep, but my problem is that while square app like icons make sense on a handheld device where you're using a touch screen and actually pressing the icon, it's makes little sense on a TV screen where the only navigation is a remote control. The only thing I do like is the new quick menu bar at the top when you go into the Movie/TV Show section, thats a great idea and I like how you go back to it when you press the menu button , so even if you've scrolled miles down a page you can always get back to it easily.

How? I've tried every button/menu item I can think of.

Looks like that picture is just the ATV set to a country that doesn't have access to those items, for instance if I set my ATV to Bolivia I lose the TV Show icon and if I set it to Sweden (Sverige), which is the location of the site that picture is from (.se), then I lose both the TV Shows and Music icons just like the picture.

FAIL!

A colourful, though clumsy initial interface followed by, as others have mentioned, the clumsy old interface!

Really, Apple, fix the bloody TV Shows will you! ATV1 had it right and is still a pleasure to use for watching TV Shows.

This is the point...

If you look at what both Microsoft and Apple are doing, they are attempting to create the "universal" Operating system for each platform. One that will work on a computer, tablet and mobile phone. By using a more universal OS, users will have a seamless transition on using each device.

Look at Windows 8. It essentially mimics Windows Mobile OS, like wise with the Xbox 360 now. The same goes for Mountain Lion. It is encompassing more of the UI and feature set of the mobile iOS. It only makes sense that Apple wants Apple TV to share this UI. The end result is an easy transition for the average user when going from device to device.

Hopefully with a jailbreak we could go back to the old interface

I dont like this new one

I'm with you. I really like that last UI in :apple:TV1 http://nexus404.com/Blog/wp-content/uploads2/2011/12/apple-tv-user-interface-1.jpg.

Putting all of our own media in "computers" never really made sense to me from a user perspective (I get it from a "sell itunes media" perspective). Logically, it seems like we should find our own movies in "movies" not "computers". Etc.

I do wish they would go back and revive that kind of thinking on this new hardware. Apps could just be an added menu.

And I agree with those wanting some way to organize and turn apps off. If there's ever an app store for this thing, that seems like it will be a required feature (else, can you imagine 500 apps on screen instead of the small pool there now?).

I don't seem to mind it. I didn't mind the old way either. It'll take me about a day to get used to it and all will be well.

--I'm annoyed they still haven't changed the submenus, especially for "Computers". I want my media to have the nicer views, eg swiping between seasons like you see in Purchased TV shows (and for FS please collapse seasons into one show listing).
--I don't like that the shelf disappears when you scroll down the app icons
--I was hoping they would restore a main menu style more like ATV1, with Movies, TV shows, Music, Pictures, then Apps/Internet. It was a step back to bury music/pics into Computers, and when Itunes Match launched and Music became a main menu item again I thought the next step would be to restore "Pictures" and give Photostream more prominence.

Having said that, it may have slightly higher WAF--my gf didn't realize she could scroll down internet to find more stuff :). i still think "Computers" is unnecessary. The respective Movie/TV Show section can have "My Media" links that THEN take you to the Home shares to pick but oh well. But you get the feeling this is still a placeholder GUI until there are apps/games on this thing. There's more to come to this box I'm sure.

I dont like having stuff that i don't use like apps in plain view
Maybe im OCD

But i like having things hidden

If I could remove the Apps I don't want, which is about 80% of them, I'd love it.

Agreed.
I am not sold on the new UI. For starters, the preview pane (right on top) can be a lot smaller). This would allow all the apps to fit on the same screen without having to scroll. I do not like the transition effect while navigating the main screen.

I am hoping that the extra bit of resolution from the atv3 will make this ui look cleaner. But there is room for improvement

Sigh! I was so hoping they would have added better organization for home videos (under "Computers"). I like to keep my home videos organized by date. Looks like its still a flat menu

With that said, I can definitely see that some things have sped up. Rewind, forward, etc seem much snappier

"What he said" :)
Darn! I didnt see this post earlier. My thoughts exactly.
I also get the sense that this is a placeholder UI

I'm glad I only update the bedroom ATV2; my wife always uses the living rom ATV2. I don't even want to show her this new one, I know right off she will hate it. I wish there was an easy way to go back.

Like a poster above said, if you could at least delete icons for the apps you don't ever use that would help a lot. Maybe in the future, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
