I noticed around the new year that my iCloud Drive was not syncing properly on one of my devices. It started with the Documents and Desktop folder just taking a long time to actually show up when I wiped and reinstalled macOS on my laptop. After reaching out to Apple support on jan 8 we ran a bunch of tests and found a couple other oddities I hadn't noticed. The support person I have been working with got engineering involved and we ran more tests. He tells me the issue is basically on Apple's end and engineering has it. That has been the status since the middle of January. He's waiting to hear something back from engineering. I check in every week, and every week the answer is the same. No word yet from engineering. In the mean time I just took delivery of a new 16" MacBook Pro and my Desktop and Documents folder are empty because iCloud Drive syncing is non functional.
So incredibly frustrating to be sitting here, paying for 2TB storage in iCloud and it is worthless because the service does not work and Apple's response has been to tell me to just wait for them to get around to fixing it.

Not good is it? My sympathy. Unfortunate that you just paid a LOT for your new laptop from a company that has been proving in spades for quite some time now that the interests of its customers don't really matter to them. They used to say that we are working hard to resolve the issue. Now as you have just reported, they tell customers to wait and they may get around to fixing it. Well, isn't that a first class response!! Apple is really dropping the ball but don't care. Time to stop giving them your hard earned cash for poor products and worse service. Look outwards...

Maybe if there were a better option I'd consider something else. Until that happens I'll just voice my displeasure with them when I need to. I manage over 150 Macs, and 3 Windows machines. The Windows machines require a disproportionate amount of my time.

In the mean time, in my frustration yesterday I emailed tcook@apple.com. More to just vent than expecting a response. I haven't received a response, but this morning upon login in to my laptop my iCloud Drive immediately started pulling down all my files that were missing locally. Maybe a coincidence?

same issue! i use fl studio and when trying to load audio samples that were saved in the file, re-opening FAILS to find the files but they're saved in my icloud! so then i go to my finder and i LOCATE the missing wav files that FL is telling me didn't load when opening. Those "missing" samples have the icloud sync icon next to them; as that icon they're trying to upload to the cloud- hence im getting the error from FL about missing samples.

did reaching out to apple help or am i doomed with a $900 4 month old macbook air?

I'd open a ticket. If you are lucky they'll get it fixed a lot faster than they got mine fixed.
