So... how does the "wifi" work?

Is it just like a laptop wifi in which I need to be near some form of router to wireless recieve data? Or does it have a special "iphone" ability to access the internet at all times (through AT&T wireless towers or something)

The latter would seem to be the only convenient way in which the internet-enabled features could be touted to such a high extent... else the main advantage of the iphone is... not having to open the lid of your laptop?

If you're near a router, like a laptop you get WiFi, but you can use the much slower EDGE from AT&T towers

WiFi must be near a wireless router in a home, office or business.
If there is no Wifi it defaults to the Edge network which is cellular (and slower) when it sees Wifi it goes back.

Wifi works great. Edge works well where they have upgraded it.
