I have a 2018 16" MBP that served me well during grad school but honestly I don't need such a high spec laptop anymore. I built myself a better workstation desktop which suits my power user needs. I'm also no longer shuffling to classes and am now just working from home.

I'd still want a laptop but one that's even more portable than a 16" MBP. I also find the iPad appealing because they're so fast to pick up and unlock to immediately start using. I currently use a Amazon tablet but it's quite weak and only good for reading books.

The iPad plus the Folio case seems appealing for moving about the house whenever I'm busy. I'd still like it if the iPad with the M1 could still function well as a laptop though, paired with a wireless mouse for word editing and photoediting too.

Wound it be a good move to switch?

Depends what you're doing. For word-editing and photo-editing, that should be workable. And being that you do have a desktop, it's doable unless you need specific capabilities to go with you when you leave the house.
