So I just bought an iPhone 3g 16gb Black for 175$, its in good condition just looks like its been used no noticeable damage..and i checked the serial number, its still under the limited warranty for another month. what should i do? sell? keep? im not sure, any ideas? (i already have a 3g i dont need this phone)

You seem to have answered your own question.

Why did you buy it if you don't need it?

well obviously it was a good deal, a working good condition 3g 16 gb goes for 300+ on ebay, my first intention was to resell and make a couple hundred dollars, until i noticed the warranty.

Is there light leaks? Cracks in the casing around the speaker/mic, volume/silent switches, or headphone jack? You could try getting it exchanged and extending the warranty.

How much time is left on the warranty of your original 3G? You could always sell that in it's place and make more money. Or you could be charitable and donate it to a needy friend or family member.

Not quite sure why you asked if we thought you should keep it if you already have one but that's always an option too.

actually i do see some light leakage, and there are some tiny cracks around the sim card area, my original 3g is out of warranty. looks like i may call this one in and hope for a replacement.

thanks

I'll bite: How much would you re-sell it for?

I'm getting a nice tax return and my Nokia is dying, and I can't justify an Ipad so I'm looking for a cheap Iphone.

well the cheapest ive seen this iphone in this condition go for on ebay is around 315-350$, and i do of course want to make a profit. what are you willing to pay? ive tested it the phone is 100% functional.

Well there you go. I'd suggest taking it to Apple first. If they refuse to give you a replacement take the phone support route.

I can almost say without a doubt that with light leaks AND cracks, they will replace it. When they do that, your warranty is extended 90 days. At that point, you have a crack free and (hopefully) light leak free phone that has three months warranty which likely means more money for you.

Call apple, tell them about the backlight bleed, they will then give you 2 options... send the phone in and they will send you a LIKE NEW refurb (practically brand new, no scratches) after they recieve yours.. OR put a hold on your CC + charge 29$ and do an advanced replacement where they send you the phone first and then you send yours back in the box they send you.. (you can politely ask them to waive the 29 dollar fee and they will) and wah-la, brand new iphone.. *unfortunately your warranty transfers on the new iphone from the old.. but let me assure you the phone has 0 scratches, in original factory wrappers.

Just a suggestion: If the device hasn't been updated to 3.1.3, I would jailbreaking and unlocking it using blackra1n/blacksn0w. That'll make it worth a little more if you decide to sell.

That is, of course, if you don't get it exchanged.

i have actually done that already lol, but i can still do that after the exchange

Ditto...that's what I would do.

i figure i only have about to weeks until no warranty at all, so i might as well try and see if i can get a replacement, worst they can say is no or something. and if they do then i have a mint condition iphone i could sell for more $. so im going to try that first. im partial to parting it out, but i'll decide after i find out what apple is going to do.

also, i called at&t to check my eligibility for a 3gs upgrade, and it will be $399 before 5/2010 and after its $199, so i wanna wait for that (maybe the new iphone will be out then lol) i may use this to sell and sorta get a free 3gs or new iphone and keep my 3g as a back up or w/e , i dunno i guess alot of options. but im still very glad i got it when i did and for how cheap, as of now, either way i win, lo

put the order in last night for apple to call me at noon today, so we will see what they will do for me. I'll post back what happens later.

Just got off the phone with an "Apple Expert" and he said that with the cracks and light bleeding issue, that hes pretty sure i'll get a replacement. So im shipping it off ups as soon as i get off work, and i'll be expecting it Monday or Tuesday at the latest. He was like "Wow!, I'm glad you called when you did, your warranty expires in 14 days!. so its working out good so far.

I dont understand why anyone would buy a used iphone if they could just cancel there contract and start a new one for the exact same press or even less!

He wouldn't have to cancel anything. He would get the subsidized pricing on a new phone for simply renewing his contract.
