...but has anyone thought about or heard about the possibility of this thing backing up to a Time Capsule - wirelessly?

That would be a nice feature.
 
Doesn't iTunes do this?

When you connect an iPhone or Touch to iTunes it creates a backup I think. I would think the iPad would do the same. If you backup your iTunes via Time Capsule then you should be covered.
 
Given that Time Machine turns on the fans on my MBP any time it runs, I can't see it!

Anyway, if it's like an iPhone, a backup will be taken at each iTunes sync.
 
I'm thinking of a use case such as my Mom (who I intend to get an iPad for) where she will use it and love it but never remember to nor have a reason to sync with iTunes.

She can get her books on it, internet, music, apps - why would she ever actually need to sync to iTunes? 'Her' photos will actually be my photos of her grand daughter synced to it via Mobile Me...

So, I see this backup piece as a hole in her user experience.
