So I got my dual 2ghz power mac refurb, rev. b. came with two 512mb RAM for a total of 1gb in just two slots. But came with the original 5200 64mb vid card. That's ok. But it did not ship with Tiger!! They gave me panther and ilife 05. That's iT! So I called Apple and he said they should have included it and would tell the software people and they would call me back. We'll see. I'm really not liking having Panther, it stinks!!

On another note, is the Geforce FX 5200 64mb enough for Tiger and all? I'd like a higher powered card if I can get one for not so much, maybe $150. Anything out there for me?

Thanks, it's already so much fun having a Mac again, despite not having Tiger!

On the refurb machines the Tiger disk come separate an could easily be forgotten. Looks like they forgot to drop one in. The video card is ok it depends what you are planning on doing with it.

yeah i figured it came separatley and they forgot it! Does anyone have an idea how long it will take before I can get Tiger? Should I just buy one educational discount for $69 and then sell it on ebay when I get the one from Apple?

Don't worry too much about not having Tiger, you'll get it eventually. As for Panther "stinking", as you put it, what are you basing that on? Panther is an amazing OS, less of a resource hog than Tiger, and less buggy. I am still running Panther and do not plan on switching to Tiger ever. Personal preference I guess though... I can't find any compelling reasons to upgrade.

As for the FX5200 card, it's a fine card, even though some misinformed people here will tell you its utter crap. Of course, if you're planning on doing some hardcore gaming, intense 3D work, etc. (Pro functions) you may want to to look at upgrading.

i just want to have spotlight. when i see my uncle on his dual 2.7 w/tiger, spotlight looks awesome. and i wouldn't mind having dashboard. although it seems that a lot has improved in tiger since i updated to 10.3.9 instead of having the 10.3.5 originally. Fixed a lot of problems with java and safari crashes. i guess i'll just hold and hope apple gives me tiger soon.

i don't plan on doing a lot of 3d work or any gaming. what about ripping dvds or recording tv via AlchemyTV pvr? I'd like to do that, but is this vid card enough for that? Or does it really not make much of a difference anyway as it's probably all cpu related

Yeah, see, I have no need for either of them. I don't have a ton of files on my machine, and the files that I do have, I keep neat and tidy - my machine isn't cluttered. I know where everything on my system is and don't keep things messy, therefore spotlight has few advantages for me. As for Dashboard, again, I don't need all those widgets running in the background sapping my system's memory. If I need some info right away that badly I'll Google it or use other means.

Those activities are more CPU-intensive and have very little to do with your video card.

I dont see how you can say Tiger isnt compelling. I thought the same about Spotlight until I used it. It isnt just the system search at the top right hand corner, its the fact its built in EVERYWHERE.

Like if I attach a file, theres a spotlight search right on the attach file dialogue. I dont need to go routing through folders to find what I want.

Secondly, Safari is far far better on Tiger, especially with 10.4.3. Although if you use a different browser, I guess this point is moot.

for under $200 you can get the G5 version of the ati 9800 card
that is 256mb, very nice card for wat you'll need it for and a dramatic step up from the 5200

Safari on 10.4.3 is very bloody good. I use dashboard a hell of a lot more than I thought I would. Being on dial up means I can't be online all the time, dashboard gives me a TV guide and a bunch of world clocks (dad's a pilot, they come in handy) at the click of a button. All I have to do is go online once a day to update the TV guide and that gives me the weather forecast too.

I don't know if it's any quicker than Panther though, I think they're pretty similar in that respect on my machine. Newer iBooks may be different though. I'll max out the RAM and put Leopard on it to get me to my next Mac.

For me, it's just not worth the upgrade - the added features just aren't anything I am in dire need for. Safari and Mail on Panther work fine for me. I'm sure I would use Spotlight, etc. more often if I had it, but still, I can find better Apple products to spend my money on right now - especially with MWSF around the corner. ;)

Not bashing Tiger at all - it just isn't for me, as Panther is great. If it ain't broke...

just got off the phone with apple. they are overnighting Tiger tonight and i'll have it tomorrow! Just when I started to dislike them, they do something good. although i would have liked to have it yesterday, but it will only be that much better when it comes!

as for the video card, i think i'm going to hold off and keep the 5200 for now. i'd like to only have to upgrade vid card in this machine once, so i'll just wait for the best card avaliable for AGP to fall down in price to say $200 and then i might get it.

as for the tv tuner, alchemy is the only internal pci one right? I think I'll get that. Either that or an ipod video. Maybe both, then i could put the recorded videos on the ipod!
