I noticed on my new Apple TV that I can't access my videos from iTunes unless I have iTunes software open on the computer? I knew that I have to leave my computer on, but I didn't know I have to keep iTunes open too? Am I missing something? Any help is appreciated.

yes, yes, yes, no.

if you had the old one, you could sync to the hard drive and turn off your computer.

No, I have the new one. So I have to keep the iTunes software running whenever I want to access videos from my computer?

yes.

edit: for now. when airplay comes out, you'll be able to stream from your computer or ipod/iphone/ipad without itunes.

yes

Same as Airtunes streaming from your computer to an Airport express.
Just leave it open forever, what else are you using all that RAM for?:p

Cool! I look forward to the update, and new Apps that work and get integrated with Apple TV!

I've never heard of Airplay working from a computer to the ATV. Only from iOS device to ATV.

I have, I did it last night. Airplay only does audio right now (it's an evolution of AirTunes), but I can play music in iTunes, choose to output to the AppleTV2, and bam, there's the music. No doubt video is going to work the same, soon as 4.2 is out and it's enabled on the iOS devices. Like someone said, probably in a future iTunes update.

So in that case--computer on but iTunes not open?

i misspoke. video streaming via airplay is said to be for ios devices on 4.2. however, i don't know if i'd rule out that it may eventually include osx devices.

You do need iTunes open but you can have your computer asleep and have it wake on network access - the atv will do that for you when you select your iTunes library from the computers menu.

Not sure what combo of software/firmware and airport device/Mac you need to make it work.

Apple support page will show you how to setup wake on access and what configuration of kit you need to make it work.

Personally, I don't mind having to leave my mini on all the time. At the max, the mini, my Drobo, and the :apple:TV combined consume less than 150 watts, and normally it's much, much less than that. At idle (which is the majority of the time), it's under 30 watts.

I just hope Apple enables AirPlay video from Mac to :apple:TV at some point. I don't keep anything stored on my iPad, and I hate the idea of having to stream from my Mac to my iPad, then from my iPad to my :apple:TV. Now that is wasteful.

How does this work? When I close my MBP's lid, it disappears from the Apple TV's list of computers.

For those of you who have been able to get wake on demand to work with the ATV2, about how long does it take for your computer to wake and your iTunes library/home share to appear on the ATV2 menu?

Just curious because I'm having home share issues. Thanks!

Hi,

for me it's maybe 10-15 secs - that's the time it takes for

[a] the Mac Mini to wake up and then for
the external array (DRobo via F/wire) to spin up to speed.

:)

You need to read Apple's support page for Wake On Demand. There are additional requirements if you are on a laptop and not a desktop.
