So, I hear iWork doesn't play nice with desktop version (sigh)

You're correct. Reading that TUAW piece highlights the problems when syncing between desktop and iPad, something I thought Apple would've nailed before releasing. :(
I'm sure it WORKS fine, but does it still work fine when you import Pages or Keynotes from your Mac? Is the formatting and everything as it was? TUAW's files weren't.

I'm not a hater, I'm just feeling kind of disappointed if the iPad really does clunk up whatever work was created on a Mac.
Have you guys had similar problems as the TUAW guy?
 
Meh. Shouldn't really be a surprise, first generation software from Apple is notoriously underfeatured and buggy. Witness Final Cut Pro, .Mac, Project Builder / Xcode, the desktop versions of iWork, OS X itself, and many, many others. They'll get it worked out, and when they do I'll happily give them my money for it, but not yet.

Sounds spot on.

I was on the fence whether or not to buy the iPad or wait until the 2nd gen. I think I'll be waiting now and resist...at least by then, the bugs will be ironed out overall and in iWork (which was a huge selling point for me, so I'd love to see it fixed).
 
Also, I'm guessing the team working on it may have been rushed to get it out for launch with the iPad, so I'm sure some features had to be delayed and testing was minimal.
 
Sounds like a real issue if you plan to move documents back and forth between the iPad and you're Mac. I have to believe they can fix this in a few updates. I hope so anyway.

Comments basically echo what the article says about Keynote...apparently Pages and Numbers have problems of their own when using the desktop created files. Apple's forums have got some complaints about desktop to iPad compability.

It's possible, but didn't Apple say they've been at it for a year now with iWork for iPad?
 
I found out the hard way that you need e latest version of iWork to do it. I have to export to .doc then open it up in pages :mad:
 
I have some fairly complicated models in Numbers, and some richly formatted/aligned documents in Pages.

The only surprise I've gotten so far, is that any docs I have in iWork '08 can't be read by the iPad... I need to open, and resave them in iWork '09 before sync'ing to the iPad.

I was hoping to use the VGA adapter (with a VGA Screen), and Bluetooth keyboard with Pages on the iPad -- but Pages wasn't very usable in that setup. You really need to tap on the screen a lot, and moving around the document wasn't possible with the keyboard.

The iPad would be great on a trip, where you're e-mail'd a document and need to make some updates and send it back. (capability that I think will happen with iPhone OS 4.)

It's nice to be able to take a boilerplate document, or spreadsheet out to a client, sit and work on an agreement together, or pricing model, or whatever, tap the numbers in and e-mail it on the spot.

I passed on Keynote -- so I can't comment on it.
