So I went out yesterday with my Moto X and iPhone 5 and took some pictures.

Here's some comparisons with which shot was taken by which device listed at the bottom of the list. Tell me your opinions on the cameras. Shots weren't made to be particularly artistic, just for comparison sake.

That's impressive. Wasn't expecting the moto x camera to be so good. Usually the standard Google camera app isn't very good compared to the customized ones that Samsung and other big time manufacturers use.

I could tell which one was the 5S (the better ones and I think most could tell), but the moto did take took pictures too

I definitely preferred the photos from the iPhone. I truly would say it is the major flaw with the Moto X.

I also have a Moto X, camera doesn't even compare to the iPhone 5s or even my Note 3. These are all outdoor in good light anyways. Want to see a massive difference? Try some indoor low light shots without flash. You'll want to throw the X out the window. The only redeeming fact is that the X has a TON of in camera adjustments you can make to the pics. More than Ive seen on any phone before.

Oh the low light performance is horrifying. The first photo I took on this phone was indoors at night and I was shocked how bad it was. I was under the assumption that this phone was supposed to be great at low light.

I like a mixture of the moto x and iPhone 5 photos. The moto x is known for poor camera quality though so a little research would have told you if you were looking for a good camera phone.

Thanks for the comparison. The iPhone seems to have deeper and more vibrant colours. Maybe it was the auto exposure. Aside from 3 and 4, which are different pictures in my opinion, it was pretty obvious which was the moto x. That said, I would just carry a camera if I were looking for that type of quality in photographs...

moto x camera is amazing. Just needs further software optimization which I will start developing when my order comes in.

They both look nice, I'd say with the advantage going to the iPhone. Since iPhone 4, Apple has been making the camera a pretty big priority. On the other hand I haven't seen an android phone yet that is as nice. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, but I've never seen one. For someone who doesn't have a clue about good photography, I always got great results with the iPhone. A couple were blown up and framed. I haven't been on an iPhone in about a year and I do miss the camera.

Now if you really want some stunning pics, the Lumia's are on a whole other level as far as camera phones go.

all it basically needs is a auto-tone/levels and you can easily make the pictures look comparable. Yes if you have zero photoshop skills the iphone is definitely the clear winner.

As you said, one can make them look almost indistinguishable with a color adjustment. These are just software tweaks. Don't think anyone using their phone as a camera will care to Photoshop the picture so what the standard output is likely what's used 99% of the time.

BTW, I read something exciting in the AnandTech Nexus 5 review...
"The new camera API works a lot more like a real pipeline rather than a black box whose state is relatively unknown to the system above it. What features Google exposes with the new upcoming camera API will undoubtedly enable better camera apps, RAW capture, and burst modes, but I’d argue that the problem with Android’s camera at present is really just a matter of tuning and lacking UI."

For anyone who may actually use PS or another tool, this will be welcome indeed!
