Down south
I finally pushed the order button on my mini 5. I’ll have my iPP 11”, the mini 5, and my iPhone 11. I’m planning for each to have a main “function.” My iPP gets used mostly at the table with the keyboard folio, at client meetings when I need to be able to have a keyboard with me, for my digital planner because I like writing best on it because of the matte screen protector and the better pencil.

My mini will be more for my personal downtime; reading, podcasts, the few games I enjoy playing, etc.

My phone will be used more now for just phone/text functions, but I’ll always keep games, music, etc. on there as well since inevitably I’ll be places where I’ll have time to kill and won’t have my mini with me.

So how do you load each device to make it where they work together for the items that overlap, but separately for those you want to be specific to a particular device?

Is that clear as mud?

I only have iPhone and iPad. When I use it, I make sure they do their own thing while allowing me to switch between each device seamlessly. That is, both iPad and iPhone have identical collection of apps with a few exceptions. If I use bank app on iPhone, I expect it available for me on iPad as well.

Um, in short, I use iPhone like using an iPad and vice versa most of the time.

That’s a bit how I currently have mine set up, but I won’t need a 2nd iPad to have all the same stuff. I want it to be more specific to what I’ll be using it for.

I’m wondering if there’s a way to keep everything from sharing to it. I’m assuming so, but need to be sure I know how to do that.

Restore it from a backup so that all your data is on it. Then put the stuff you plan to use most in the dock. Throw the rest into a folder to have less clutter.

Enjoy the new device!

I just load up the same apps on all my ios devices, even UFC I know I am never going going to use them. This way, my guess and data stay synced on all of them. So in a sense, my iPhone and iPad are mirror images of each other.

iPhone, almost everything
iPad, almost nothing, JUST media consumption

No handoff, no notifications, no nothing on the iPad. Divorced from everything else completely. 55 gigs available of 64, lol.

12.9 iPP for much of eveything, sits on my desk, Mulittask with my Mac mini. I find myself using it more for media consumption/goofing off online around the houser Love. Love love the screen real estate and smaller footprint.

10.5 for bed use and the morning bathroom routines, take along when going on trips.

Mini 4 mounted on the wall in the living room acts like a hub.

iPhone XS for obvious use, i hardly use it when I’m home.

iphone 7 - light browsing and listening to youtube on my way to work. messaging others and the occasional phone call
ipad air 3 - all my work which includes document and presentations, and graphic design.
ipad mini 2 - distract the gf so i can play games or watch tv

iPhone X - main every day device. Spotify, SMS, WhatsApp, LINE, reddit, Instagram, Work email, Banking via apps when needed. Camera.

iPad Mini 5 - comes with me to work and acts as my notebook. Serves some light personal email/life admin needs if needed during the day. Some light browsing, YouTubing and Redditing. Some magazine reading. Will also serve as my main travel device.

iPad Pro 12.9 - my main computer at home. Browsing, spotify/youtube/entertainment consumption (usually via airplay to TV). Photo and file management. Research. Reading. Learning. Document creating. Budgeting. Emails. Holiday planning. Basically everything a computer is used for.

iPhone XR - used out and about, when I can't sit down to deal with stuff. In the car for music and maps and podcasts. Always available via call and text etc. In bed at night. On the desk at work.

iPad Air 3 - on the desk at work to attend to personal business, used at my desk at home for typing tasks, used with pencil for leisure time, used when I have the time / space to sit back and relax, used when travelling when permitted, carried everywhere just in case.

iCloud keeps them in sync perfectly. I can pick up one and resume on the other at moments notice, that's what I love most about being iPad + iPhone only. It's a dream come true.

Interesting thread! Thanks for starting it!

I can't help you as I have rather unique usage. I have two iOS devices - iPhone and iPad. As the iPhone is a company phone and iPad is a personal device I use different Apple IDs.

I do have some apps only on my iPad. Namely apps that are either Pencil usage related or apps that include lots of typing. I do not like to use on screen keyboards so I rarely type on iPhone.

On the other hand I have access to work email only on the iPhone (company security considerations) so Mail is set only there.

I do share Reminders between the two Apple IDs though.

This is what I wanted to avoid since I’m not gonna use everything on there I use on my pro. I want to keep it simple.

Kinda hoping to NOT have to put everything on it - just want stuff I’m going to use on the mini to actually be on the mini.

What’s the best way to accomplish that, and still let stuff sync that I want sync‘d (like text messages and stuff)?

Thanks!

Congratulations on your purchase!

iPhone 8+ > banking app, VLC, notability, kindle, select stock apps (Will axe kindle and VLC if/when I go smaller iPhone/iPad Mini 5)

iPad 2019 > Procreate, Sketches Pro, Concepts (free), Notability, VLC, kindle, Pixelmator, select stock apps

I bank on my phone and occasionally my iMac. I do not want the banking app on more than one iDevice.

Honestly, it is a PIA to keep all iDevices fully in sync so I have different email addresses and such between phone and iPad. iPad for play, iPhone some work-related stuff.

Great question and discussion. I really like the mini so far for a mix of creation and consumption. Picture in picture with YouTube.com in Safari means I can watch content while also shopping, writing, browsing, photo editing, etc. This alone is a huge advantage over trying to do those things on an iPhone.

For me I also realized I was really tired of looking at the same computer screen for personal stuff after looking at it for work all day. So the iPad is a great form factor change and a mental break/change from sitting at my desk and looking at my laptop screen.

I keep notifications to a minimum so that I’m not being pulled out of what I’m doing to reply to messages or answer email. If I want to do those things I can but I’ve set it up so I control whether I am giving my attention to either of those types of activities. I’m definitely seeing the mini so far as a “me time” device.

iMac (27" and 34" ultra wide) "deep" programming and UI stuff
MBP casual programming and heavy browsing (forums, news, etc.)
iPad Pro 12.9: casual browsing, note taking with Notability while I'm programming, probably will be a 2nd screen for my MBP, light gaming
iPhone 11 Pro Max: banking apps, not-at-home browsing, sitting in the doctor's surgery gaming

Emails, phone calls and messages are handled by whatever I'm using at the time.

I only heavy game on consoles.

For replacement devices, I use encrypted iTunes backup and restore.

For devices that will be used for specific tasks, I setup as new and just make use of iCloud and Dropbox to sync.

I like having iCloud sync on basically everything that supports it, so that it doesn’t matter what device I pickup, stuff are mostly just there.

I like the feature that makes it so that an app installed on one device is sent to all the others. However if you want to turn it off, it’s in settings -> “iTunes and App Store” -> “automatic downloads” (second checkbox) Then proceed to uninstall all apps you don't want on the device. iCloud “save data” per specific app you choose to keep will still sync as long as all the checkboxes in Settings -> “Apple ID (your name here)” -> “iCloud” are ticked!
