Will Apple replace it? It's been degrading ever since.

I've got AppleCare on it.

as long as its not blatantly obvious that anything that is wrong was caused by you (not saying that it is) then yes, they should replace it no problem

i cant imagine them not replacing it, what with all the things theyre replacing 3Gs for (when the screen is on in the dark, i can see light! this is bad)

Check this post. You could probably give it a try before hitting AppleCare

wouldn't that turn the sensor red?
has the OP tried a Restore? It could be sotware related.

Yeah, I would be worried about accidentally tripping the water sensor. If you do this, wait until most of the rubbing alcohol evaporates from the Qtip before sticking it in the headphone jack. At least make sure it's not dripping.

I'm not 100% sure but i think due to the different chemical properties of water and alcohol, the indicator would still be intact.

And also the OP asked about the external speaker not the headphones

My iPhone had a bug a few times with 2.0 that made it think it had the phones plugged in,I believe that's why someone suggested cleaning the jack, and therefore I couldn't hear the other person, don't recall if I could hear the ringtones though.
Anyway, does it not work with any app? try hard exiting the iPod app, a restore as well,of course.

I'd be shocked, too. Just take it in. It's hard for me to even think of a way that you could destroy the speaker through abuse without destroying the rest of the phone in the process....

But ahem, don't kill me:

- Make sure the silent alert switch (on the left side by the volume controls) isn't set to silent
- Make sure the ringer volume is appropriately set

I know, I know, but there was honest to goodness a post where, after 20 replies about why this poster's iPhone wasn't ringing audibly, she announced that she discovered it was because it was set to silent alert.

So I'm missing calls because I can't hear my 2G iPhone's speaker anymore.

The left one or the right one? :D

Take it into Apple. Why dick around with alcohol and possibly tripping the moisture sensor if you're under AC?

Just so everyone knows....its the LEFT Speeker. One of my friends came up to me the other day and was like DUDE THERE'S a SPEAKER ON THE BOTTOM THAT DOESNT WORk....haha

Someone asked earlier if I did a restore.. I have to no effect. I'm going to take it in this weekend.
