Hey friends,

I sold my Mac Pro last year because I could get a lot more power for a lot less money with a 32core thread ripper and a 3090 video card, but 2nd hand Mac pros have come down a LOT.

Tomorrow I'm going to pick up an 8 core Mac Pro tower with the 4tb ssd, and the afterburner card for around $5k, and I can get the 28core cpu on Ebay for around $1400. I still have my old 384gb ram kit from my last Mac and I can pickup a 6900xt on offer for a little over 1k. total: $7500 for a monster that will almost keep up with the PC, but I'll get back to the easy work flow of the Mac.

Do you think it will work? anyone have any issues swapping out the CPU yourselves? Any issues with the 3rd part 6900xt? "building" a $28000 Mac for less than $8k is a pretty good value proposition.

Ryan

I've done all of the upgrades myself on mine, and it's all been very simple and straight forward.

A maxed out 7,1 like that would be a real beast, so I've no doubt you'll be happy with the final result - if you're needing the power, but not enjoying the windows experience.

My company utilizes multiple Windows PCs and multiple Macs, including 7,1.
No fault in a plan that has both available.

I have here lot of higher end systems, including your mentined 32-core Threadripper 3970X. And I was shocked it falls behind for example in ingesting Prores footage using Blackmagic Decklink cards. My X299 18-core Intel 10980XE kicks ass to this 32-core Threadripper
