or only just a little?
what's your bet?

i myself would be a little upset if next FaceID will be far better in hardware.
because it could be made far better. really open a whole new facial gesture language.
i really hope it could be initiated mostly by software,
(after i invested in this year's model that is ;) )

Well going back to the upgrade from the first iPhone with TouchID I'd say the next version will be better.

that's what i'm afraid of..
but i still wonder how much the current version could still be improved by software.

Incremental. Off the top of my head, there’s only a few things I can see them doing:

1) Better True Depth camera and increase the accuracy of Face ID (ie. go from projecting 30,000 infrared dots to 40,000)
2) Wider angle recognition
3) Allow for a second profile

Here's the thing though: don't invest in iPhones. Just jump on your carrier's yearly upgrade program or better yet the Apple upgrade program and never feel remorse again. It's not worth the hassle anymore to deal with selling an iPhone amidst the sketchy and absolutely flooded market that is secondhand smartphones.

Over the course of 12 months, I pay a total of around $650 for a 256GB iPhone X with the $199 AppleCare+ included, and then as soon as the next generation is on sale I get to swap it out without having to deal with buyer's remorse on the next model, the horrible secondhand iPhone sale process to get rid of my existing device, etc. That feels like a great deal to me - the total out the door would have been double that, and if I was trying to do the yearly upgrade on my own by selling the phone I'd probably make what, $700 of of it? I'd be coming in right around the same dollars put in but with lots of extra work each year.

This way you're excited about what next year brings and not disappointed!

Not a bad option

I just prefer to own my phones off the break.

i think widening the angle is a major improvement.
the biggest hurdle is looking while flat on table to check notifications.
this is a pain in the ass.
or maybe re-sample FaceID with a different distance, angles?
what are your finding on improving position in front of the camera?
what about lighting? exaggerate face angles?

It's hard to say, because Apple may choose to focus on other aspects of the iPhone to improve and not update FaceID at all--or they might.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, technology is always going to move forward and if Apple doesn't improve FaceID on the next go-around then there will be something else exclusive to next year's model that will make people want to buy it.

So far, FaceID has worked well for me--but I would like to see it unlock faster.

I don’t have the X currently. I’m waiting on the Plus version and improvements/new features so I can decide then if I’ll take the plunge. I just have a general idea on what Apple could possibly improve on FaceID for the next release.

Based on feedback from friends and a couple of co-workers, they see improvements in recognition accuracy the more they use FaceID. However, a couple of them don’t like the distance requirement - says they can’t hold it too close or too far away. One doesn’t like that FaceID doesn’t work in landscape - the laying in bed situation basically.

Works for u.

But I like my yearly $300 gift card promo around November each year.

iPhone 8 Plus $800 msrp. Waived activation from sams club. $300 gift card. Net cost is around $500.

Resell iPhone next year for $500 pretty easy. If I were desperate I would sell it for $400 in about 5 seconds.

My out of pocket expenses is close to zero.

This is a much better idea. I buy my iPhones outright and tend to keep them at least two if not 3 years. Who keep wants to be paying month after month after month. I don’t find it a necessity to own the latest iPhone each year.

Agreed. On top of that if you ever need to leave the country, your phone is unlocked outright. It won't be and can't be if you are month to month as my traveling friend found out.

Mine works pretty darn good for a first year. No complaints. Where is it "severely" lacking?

Apple Pay worked perfect on 3 transactions today.

Nothing is perfect, especially for everyone. But, each day I like the X better. Wasn't sure when I bought it, if I would like it at all.

It really depends. With TID, there was a significant sensor update, there was a fidelity issue. With FID, we don't know if there's any significant improvement needed in the TD cluster, as it relates to speed and accuracy vs. improvements in the software/ML layer, SOC, neural engine cores, etc.

I'm betting on software and non-TD specific hardware updates only.

That works for you, cool. The used market is damn near impossible to navigate due to the tradein giants flooding the marketplace and every non-flooded venue is sketchy as can be. Buyers are skeptical and frugal and it’s just not a place I ever want to be dealing again. I’m leaving it to the giants.

Phones bought directly from Apple are unlocked for us in the uk.

FaceID does NOT require a HUGE improvement. Some of these thread titles are so juvenile.

I agree. But you have also have to factor in how the iPhones are improved on an annual basis, which is not necessarily a vast upgrade as it is. It's always incremental in what they improve in terms of software and hardware can be based on supply constraint for components.

Not to mention landscape recognition,
Or whole 360 angle if we’re at it.

I see lot of people do bringing up the landscape or 360 recognition but for me personally I don't remember a single time unlocking my iPhone on landscape or when it is upside-down. Yes, there have been many times when the phone was on a table on landscape and I have quickly pressed home button to see for notification..... but that's about it. If I pick the phone to use it, it would definitely have to be on portrait mode.
But for me a wider angle of recognition on the Face ID would be welcome.
