FaceID has worked well enough for me that I don’t need too much more out of it.

Couple revisions with the probable new Bionic chip would be even faster unlocking and improved accuracy(combined with a new dot projector).

One thing I would like is to be able ask Siri to use FaceID, unlock, and read notifications while I’m working on something with my hands.

Another thing would definitely be a wider angle of readability and usability with detecting your face.

What if god forbid you needed facial reconstruction surgery. Then what?
This made me wonder.

Can amputees use TouchID somehow?

Serious question.

Its a terrible deal to me.
I never rent my phones or any of my devices.
To be honest I dont like to rent anything in life, its a waste of money.

How is it a waste of money, and how is this in any way renting the device? You're paying less than 50% of the total cost of the phone and AppleCare over the entire period that it's the top end device. This is a 0% interest loan and you own the device. The loan balance is canceled when they get your trade-in at the end of the one year and you're handed a brand new flagship device.

So, here in California if I were to pay outright for the same thing:
iPhone X 256GB $1149
AC+ $199
Sales tax 9.75%
~$1479 out the door.

Apple Upgrade Program:
Financed $1348, pay $56 per month over one year = $672 out the door.
I paid $0 via Apple Pay on preorder night, so I'm not sure what happened to the taxes.

Not only that, but Apple will take the phone back, close the loan, and hand me a brand new flagship phone next year on day one? And it'll let me in a little earlier to the preorders? And you're building credit?

I can't even spin that to be a bad deal. I guess maybe if you specifically plan to keep it for 2 years, but why would you? For the same dollar cost you could have both year 1 and year 2 phones over the same period with zero change to how you own or use the device.

Touch ID will register pretty much any piece of skin you give it. As long as they can get the sensor to contact a consistent part of their body each time, it'll unlock.

I don't want to purchase AppleCare plus.
And if you continue to upgrade each year you're pretty much renting a phone.
It's a never ending lease that you pay mandatory insurance and fulll sales tax each year.

So... don't upgrade to a new phone on principle? I don't see any tangible benefit in that. I'll take both new phones over a 2 year period for the same money and not have to use a case because of AppleCare, thanks.

You're not taking 2 new phones over 2 years for the same money. You're paying full sales tax twice for those devices. And once you hand in the old device the 2 year loan starts all over again.
They're still making you paying $200 for Applecare plus something I dont want or need.
I get that coverage elsewhere for free and just because I can get a free loan for something it doesnt mean I want to.
I dont want to utilize my credit or pull loans for something that I shouldn't have to make 24 month payments on.
If I cant pay off in full an electronic device within a month then I cant afford it.

There is a scenario where you take advantage of financing deals that are in your favor and still be able to afford it outright.

50 bucks a month to always have a flagship device while paying 0% in interest the entire time is a great deal for a device I use for business every single day, and the best pocket camera there is as a photographer that's worth it. I'm not hanging onto some crusty device for a second year because of sales tax! That's nuts.

For those of us who prefer to go careless, AppleCare is awesome. Lets you appreciate the device as it was intended with first party protection and repair that isn't going to be shoddy like the third party services always are. Not sure where the skepticism comes in.

See even when I had the Applecare plus I'd still have to pay $99 if I dropped and cracked the device. So that's where the case comes in for protection cause accident do happen.
But hey I hear you, if it works for you and you're happy then that's all that matters in the end.
Others have different views and purchasing habits that's all ;)

FaceID on the iPhone X is a potential deal breaker for me. If I hold the phone in front of my face, it works perfectly. But it slows down or doesn’t work when off angle, at a distance etc and it’s becoming annoying. I’d say 60-70% of the time I don’t put the phone right in front of my face when I want to unlock it (notifications checking for example) I already miss touchID on my 6S plus. I still have about 3 weeks to decide to return or not depending on how much I can deal with this FaceID thing. Other than this, this phone is so good. Next year I think there’s little chance Apple will improve FaceID.
