Yeah, but I do most of my reading in very dark rooms at night. So the yellow tone I find a lot more pleasant to read for hours and hours on - probably why I'm a big fan. I love nightshift too. I also prefer a dark office, so may be because of that.
Ironically, I don't like Night Shift so much. True Tone I like because it factors in ambient lighting. The problem with Night Shift is that it doesn't. It's kind of a best guess, which always seems to be a bit off to me. You can adjust for it, but in the end I just keep it turned off. But I like True Tone. I do find it does lean towards the warm somewhat, but nonetheless it's overall quite pleasing, whether in high or low ambient lighting.

Ideal would be a True Tone with an adjustment slider (like Night Shift has) but overall it's well implemented.

At first I thought it was too yellow, but a friend told me to stick with it for a week and then turn it off. Turning it off showed me that I dont want to live without it. Everything went from a nice warm tone to bright blue, which was harder on my eyes. On my 2017 iPad that didnt have TT, I had to use Night Mode to achieve something similar, but as you said it doesn't automatically adjust. So it's going to be nice for me to get the Air when it comes out to get real TT again.

I'm trying True Tone (again) on my phone. This time I will try to do as you did and stick with it for several days. But of course, my iPad which I also use daily doesn't have it, so maybe I'll be be able to fully get used to it when I'm constantly using a device that doesn't have it.

I think much of this difference in viewpoints here may have to do with how you use your iPad. For me, it's mostly an information and comminication device rather than for entertainment. If movies, TV shows, YouTube, etc., are the main (or key) drivers, I can see how Promotion, True Tone, 120hz refresh, 4 speakers, etc. might be a must. Personally, I'd rather use the TV and good HiFi system for that. But if you travel and want to be entertained, then yes.

I would recommend the 2018 iPad to anyone who is price sensitive. Yes the iPad Air 3rd Gen and iPad Mini 5th gen are both better, but they do have their added costs. However, for a basic web surfing and consumption device, the iPad 6th Gen is still a great value if you have price concerns and cannot spend more than $350-$450 for these basic needs.

ProMotion makes scrolling in Safari sooooo much smoother. It’s not an absolutely critical feature but it looks much, much better.

However, if you have not seen it before, you would not know what you are missing.

Also, True Tone makes the screen more pleasant for surfing in low indoor ambient lighting.

Macrumors is a horrible influence. :(

Traded in 2018 for 10.5 iPad Pro at Best Buy. They had a $150 off deal. Cough.

My previous iPad was a Mini 4. The laminated display certainly is nicer, but I don’t find that not having one feels like a great loss to me, but that’s just me.
I dunno why but I've noticed I get more frequent migraines when using the iPads with non-laminated displays (Air, 5th gen) than those with laminated (Air 2, Pro 9.7).

True Tone doesn't seem to have much effect on it though (I've already got Night Shift on 24/7).

Night Shift 24/7? I couldn't handle that. Might as well coat the display in yellow cellophane.

Lol, I have computer glasses that filter blue light for when I'm using desktops and laptops or watching TV (so yep, yellowish hue). It has helped reduce my migraine attacks. True Tone on top of Night Shift doesn't appear to help much, though.

Another user of computer glasses here. It has helped me a lot too. (C# programmer)

One of my goals is not stare at a screen of any kind too much, and do other things. I had to do that all day in my IT job, and now retired don't want to follow that path. Too much not great for the eyes or health. Buying an expensive iPad just adds psychological pressure to constantly use it, or seems like a waste of money. Hence the regular iPad fits this plan, and the display still looks great.

Going to wait to see what iOS 13 brings. I want to see what iPad features Apple adds to it and if any of those features will be limited to the Pro models or not. I really want external storage but I’m not hopeful any iPad with a lightning connector will get that. I can see this feature be another reason for Apple to sell the 2018 Pro line.
