I'm really confused. I've been using a succession of iPhones exclusively for about a decade now and never had the slightest issue with my email functionality. My needs are very simple. I use the standard, organic iPhone email program to monitor a single, solitary EarthLink email account. A MacBook Pro at home - again using the default OSX email program - also receives emails on this account and it is when I delete or transfer emails on this laptop that they are removed from the EarthLink server.

I don't know that a person's email needs can get any simpler than that. Heretofore, deleting emails, or transferring them to folders, on my laptop had no effect on my ability to interact with the same email once it had been downloaded to my iPhone. Recently, however, I upgraded from the 5 to the 6S Plus. Now, half the time I go to view an email on my phone it says "message not downloaded from the server". As well, I just had an important email that I was composing on my iPhone vanish into the ether with the same message displayed. This was particularly frustrating insofar as this message had never been uploaded to any server - it had only ever existed on my phone.

So just what in the hell is going on? Am I missing some simple setting? Does this have anything to do with all the goddamned "iCloud" ********* that Apple now seems to determined to shove down our throats at every opportunity? Or is there just some new basic level of incompetence now at work?

Stock email in iOS9 has been showing issues. There are a number of threads on this.
Most of us with issues are using a mail specific app or other app like Outlook.
Short term fix to see if Apple fixes the issues.
Haven't seen any for Earthlink email.

Don't know what to say, I have 6 email accounts in the mail app and never a stutter since iOS 9 gm, now on 9.1.

What you are experiencing is not the norm.
iOS 9 is stuttering for a LOT of users.Check out Apple support forums

Anyway, the stock Mail client of Apple is a POS and is in my Apple Junk folder. You should use a real email client like Outlook or Inbox.Outlook is the best IMO.Divides emails into basic, focused, can attach things from other emails and many more features

It's also not stuttering for a lot of users. Be that as it may, I have no issues with the stock mail app, it suits my requirements and can efficiently handle the volume of email I receive and send. Saying its a POS really doesn't explain your issues and is a view point I disagree with.

I've heard of occasions of emails not arriving, asking for passwords very often, emails not sending, drafts disappearing, etc from my friends and acquaintances. It isn't just on iOS 9 although the new iOS doesn't seem to be friendly to the Mail app.

I suggest getting a different mail app, like Outlook. I haven't used the standard Mail app in years

Like a few others here, I have several email account setup on iOS 9 and am not experiencing any issues.

However, if I Google the error message you're getting ("message not downloaded from the server"), I see hits going back as far as 2008, so it doesn't appear that there's anything new with that. I'm sorry that you've run into it now, though.

Is your iPhone using iMAP or POP to connect your EarthLink email account?

Thanks for the assist, aristo.
The incoming mail server host points to pop.earthlink.net

FWIW, to the best of my knowledge, my email has been configured this way for years.

The stock email app is brilliant for those who have multiple accounts. I haven't found any on Android that suit me anywhere near as well.

delete your email account and re-add. That cleared a lot of issues for some users.

Some Things the Apple Mail App cant do

1.Divide my emails into Focused and Others so the important mails come automatically in the right section
2.Integrates all my Cloud uploads from all services like Google Drive,Dropbox,Onedrive etc and Calendar in one app so I can just schedule my reminders right in the same app
3.I can attach files I havent downloaded yet are present in the email I have received
4.Accept calendar invites without even opening the message
5.More battery life

I use the default mail app for just one account minimally, it's been very reliable till iOS 9 now it's very buggy. Yet I expected that until Apple issues a rev or two (updates) at which point I'm sure they will have it back working properly.

But iOS 9 didn't break these. Ignoring #5 are you saying that this functionality was available in iOS 8.4.1 in the stock app?

Have you tried K9 or CloudMagic?

Security issues with CloudMagic by all accounts and I wouldn't trust any lesser-known mail client for the same reason. It would be the stock email app, Gmail or Outlook for me and none of them can touch Apple's email (*for my taste).

Agree. On my Mini3 I had 8 accounts on 8.x all congregated for easy viewing (and deleting/archiving).
Under 9.x I am finding that I am running into more issue the more I add. I now have a screen of mail apps for most instead of stock email. I do keep a couple on stock (nothing critical) just to see how it's doing.

Funny you would say that, after installing iOS 9.1 I started getting the following error from time to time:

Didn't break RADON's list.
Still, vanishing email, emails that wont display correctly, deleted emails that come back, sent emails that don't, lots of automated issues......
Not saying I have all these; actually I do but some infrequently; it's just that the stock email app has issues under 9.x.

Yep. Comes and goes.
Gives me the error at times while it is happily pulling in the new mail.
Annoying.

I'm not having any email issues with stock 9.1 app. Yes it doesn't do all things that people want but that has always been true. Some of those I'm sure a lot of people don't want etc. I think some people think an i Device is a fully functional business computer and it isn't - it is a smart phone or pad. The standard App is for the majority of users who don't have intricate requirements and desires - that is why there are so many apps being written and sold - to provide specific more intricate solutions.

Honestly, I find it interesting that some people are having a lot of issues and others having no issues. I wish I and others know why.

I have not seen any of those items however I'm sure they are legitimate even if only a few people see it.

It has improved with each new iOS9.x release.
Still, on a daily basis on my Mini 3 (have 2 gmail, icloud, and MSN account on it);
  • select an email and the read pane has just the subject and header. no body
  • tells me I have pending mail but nothing shows till I close, clear task, and reopen
  • send email from photo and it sits in unsent until manually triggered
  • read an email, close app, reopen and email is missing but not deleted/archived
  • receive the Gmail "can't get" alert while behind it the emails are downloading
  • then there is the offline reading ..... may or may not have body data but always has the header data
Keep in mind, these are infrequent issues. 90%+ of the time it works just fine.
It's why I now have a page of email apps. I do use the stock occasionally just to see how it's working.

btw: I didn't realize about the missing emails until a user posted on another thread and I took some comparative views on side by side devices. It is always read emails that are missing.

You understand that most of these 3rd party apps with major email services (like gmail) use OAuth and what that does right? It gives the app access to the data without the password. That's why like when you sign in with gmail is asks you to approve the app- give it access to data but NOT your password.

People concerned about "giving a 3rd party mail app their email passwords" clearly have no idea how OAuth works and shouldn't be spreading complete FUD otherwise.
