So I was potentially interested in getting a new iPad but now I will hold out considering the numerous reviews slating it and seeing the many MANY bad reviews it’s getting on YouTube.
Essentially it’s not powerful enough to notice any difference between M1 and M2, the cost is astronomical and the features it has are minimal. I’ve been looking at trying to find an M1 iPad but I may just not even bother getting one now. I wonder if we are at the stage in IPads where they have essentially peaked and they can’t offer much more ?
I do think a new design is needed rapidly but how can Apple go forward from here ?
The M2 to me seems a total cash grab for people who will just buy anything Apple related because it’s new when the M1 appears to outperform it on every metric

It’s NoT for You or anyone with last years M1 iPad Pro. It’s NOT. It’s for ME and my Millions of friends who have a 2018 iPad Pro. And its a MEGA Upgrade going from a 2.4Ghz CPU A12X to a 3.4Ghz CPU the M2 CPU plus all the other enhancements. I much appreciate the value in keeping the form factor so my $300 Magic keyboard gets more Life And useage. Its dozens of other updates like StageManager actually running well on the newest silicon. It’s a 10 Core GPU not 8 Cores like the M1 so better gaming.

This happened in 2019 and 2020 NO one got an Upgrade in 2019 NOnE there was No release. And worse the poor suckers in 2020 got a A12Z which was trash. And 11 months later the M1 trashed it.

M2 is a sidegrade so if you can save money get the M1. Bonus with M1 if it ships with iPadOS <= 15.4.1 out of box then you have permanent unrestricted sideloading with TrollStore which allows freedom to install/run things like emulators which Apple blocks.

So I have a 2017 iPP with a A10X. Exactly how much an an ultra mega upgrade is that going to be?

Amazing how it’s being reviewed on YouTube when it’s not even out and reviewers don’t have it yet (or haven’t been cleared from the embargo).
there are a few unboxing videos and people saying it’s trash

As it occasionally happens, this one is just a spec and price bump. I agree with your conclusion, the iOS / iPadOS devices have pretty much peaked and from here on it’s likely evolution rather than revolution.

Sure seems like it’s just the usual YouTube clickbait garbage from the kind of people who would have been shouting at strangers in parks a decade ago.

As someone who hasn't owned an iPad in over 5+ years I ordered one. I wanted the 11 inch size and at the time I ordered, I couldn't find a good discount of over $50 for getting the old model.

If I could find an old model for ~$300 less, then I'd probably go that route, but an extra year of software support is worth a bit higher pricetag for me.

The other upgrades over the 2021 model are kinda meh for me, take it or leave it.

Exactly! It bewilders me that people expect Apple to introduce dramatic changes and upgrades every product iteration! What company does this? (I'm talking quality companies, not makers of cheap knockoffs from China and elsewhere.)
Apple invests heavily in their redesign, and like any smart company they recoup those development costs over time. Apple also knows that the vast majority of customers are not desperately seeking tech-dopamine rushes every year, and only upgrade every 3-4 years when they have a real, defined need for doing so. So incremental updates in between major redesigns make good business sense.

Not just that. People expect a redesign as well. 😆

Maybe one shouldn't decide M2 iPad Pro is pointless until they've compared Geekbench scores with M1 iPad Pro. If it's pro equipment, Geekbench must be important; MacBook Pro owners sure obsess about it.

I personally feel like my 2020 A12Z has been incredibly valuable. Does everything I wanted it to achieve, got a good price on it and its made me a lot more money back over the past 2 years. I have zero reason to upgrade this moment in time. Only reason I’ve been using it less is because I now have an iMac for the majority of my work.

I feel people get very attached to performance scores but the reality is there’s going to be little the M2 does that the 2018 iPad Pro couldn’t achieve. The real metric in my opinion is perspective. If a person sees value in the M2 iPad Pro and is able to use it to achieve their goals it clearly has a point.

Trash? That ruins their credibility for sure. Not exciting? Perhaps, but trash? smh Useless Youtubers.

It’s more exciting to move between extremes. If a YouTuber says its not exciting their audience engagement scores will go down as people turn away from the video.

Not only good business sense for Apple. I value stability as a customer because it allows me to get my work done. I certainly wouldn’t buy from a company who are always bringing drastic changes just for the sake of change.

Ofc is not pointless for the users that have a used case.
For those that an 10th ipad or an most an ipad air is enough ofc this is pointless
But this M2 with hardware proRes and ProRaw and the new pro apps that are coming is an instant buy
Often i see people that see this pointless but those are people that talks from an entry level ipad needs
I never saw an artist to complain about this...even i heard a lot that hover feature alone makes them to buy the M2 instead of the M1 or others ipads. On M1 we tried hover and it works but on different level...the distance must be under 10mm and the accuracy is garbage

As an artist, the hover feature would easily sway me to the M2 if I was in the market for a new iPad Pro.

For most M1 iPad Pro owners it is, both due to minor tech/feature differences as well as huge price jump compared to 2021 release and current prices.

M2 iPP specs and it's price just made me like my M1 iPP even more.
