So after seeing the mockups of an 11 inch iPad Pro and then reading on here...I officially have no idea if Apple is releasing a new iPad Pro now or early next year. I have a 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 and am kind of hoping it is next year because I like having the latest and greatest.

i've seen a few threads on this, but just thought this would be a good thread to consolidate the speculation.

Thoughts?

I - and I think many others - would be amazed if it were released next year.

I can't see Apple skipping a year in their iPad release cycle. Even if they just did a spec bump. I'm expecting new pros announced in October as Apple has done in the past.

My Money (as in no money) is on Mid October Holiday themed Event. Targeting Christmas Gifts and ads to match.

New Beats Headphones for the Kids
New iPad Pros for the Young adults.
New Sub $999 Macbook and MacMini for the Parents.
Had they bundled all of this into last week's event all the products could not shine through next to the iPhone.
This or March 2019 to Kill off the Samsung Galaxy S10 release.

Credible analysts are saying this year.
Key word: Analysts

Yes, I think its probably more likely October than Spring (because of all the speculation), but I think Spring is much more likely than many people think.

Why?
1) There have been very little in the way of hard rumors/leaks. Just a lot of speculation.
2) Many of the rumors have revolved around IF Apple can get FaceID to work in both portrait and landscape, something which I believe would (and should) be REQUIRED before apple would release it.
3) I don't think there is a huge urgency for a new iPad to be released, because 1st/2nd Generation Pro models are pretty good.
4) I'm not sure an A12X chip would be ready quite yet (I believe traditionally those have lagged by at least 6 months, correct me if I'm wrong). Would Apple want to release the new iPad Pro's now with an "old" (in name) A11X chip or prefer to wait until spring for an A12X?
5) iPad release cycles have increased in the past few years. Gone are the days of the certain 12 month upgrade cycle. From Air 2 to Pro 9.7 was about 1.5 years... From 9.7 pro to 10.5 pro was about 1.5 years... From 12.9 gen 1 to gen 2 was a full 2 years... And iPad mini 4 to mini 5 is...... :p Moral of the story is its certainly in the realm of possibility for the upgrade cycle to be closer to the 20 month range than 16 month.

With the iPad Pro being more of a suitable computer for people then ever before I’d say fall. I think the iPad Pro will be half of the October event that will refresh the Macs this year. Another solid indicator is the Adobe Max event on the 15th to the 17th. Adobe will be unveiling their all new Photoshop for iPad. A desktop class photoshop designed ground up for iPad. That big of a app is a great opportunity for Apple to show off new hardware. I’d bet on a Apple event the 15th or sooner where Apple premieres the new Adobe Photoshop and then the presenter says learn more in x days at our Adobe Max conference.

Apple will skip mini 5/ipad pro 3 / macbook air

those 3 item people wait will take forever
apple focusing on apple watch and xs now ,

October, A redesign will warrant the event this year and with all the iOS 12 leaks about the iPad Pro that was found by Rambo on Twitter I’d definitely wager this year. October event with:

iPad Pro redesign
MacBook Air 13” Retina display, thinner bezels
iMac - spec update and screen updates (according to Kuo)

I’m not sure on when in October we will see it tho, maybe the middle of the month or at the end, I don’t think invites will go out yet, the September event has only just taken place and it would be a pain for people to fly back home only to have Apple send out another event invite for a couple of weeks later.

I would say October. But then, i also thought they’d come last June at WWDC and when they didn’t, i was sure they’d be announced at the iphone event this month. Lol.

Apple knows that people don’t update their ipads every year like iPhones. Especially now that Apple is promoting them as laptop replacements. So i think the update cycle will continue to widen. Right now it’s a year and a half. I could see them pushing it to every two years. So next Spring is a possibility.

But realistically, i would say a year and a half is the new norm. The first 12.9” ipad pro came out in November of 2015 and didn’t see an update until June of 2017. So later this fall it will be about a year and a half since the last update which makes the most sense for the next update.

Yeah, October/November for the new ipad pros. Definitely. Lol

October seems realistic. Your target audiences are made up.

I'm hoping for October, but there are a few serious questions I have

1) Apple will need to figure out horizontal and vertical face ID. There doesn't seem to be any indication in the supply chain about whether they have done that. A vertical only Face ID would be a backwards step in many ways

2) Very few credible leaks around form factor

3) Pricing - The iPhone MAX cost $1099 for 64G. iPad Pros start at $649 for the same storage. New iPads will supposedly have Face Id, new design, etc., which will justify price increases in Apple's mind. However, I don't see how marketing will really let them start with an $800 iPad or whatever.

that might not be that hard to figure out. could be a software trick is all that is needed. detect that the iPad is in landscape and rotate the saved face appropriately to compare to the image being detected.

they may have not done it for the phone because they assume that folks aren't going to be doing that much landscape mode on the phone or that starting in portrait is really that big of a deal. the iPad however they encourage landscape with things like the placement of the smart connector etc

I have similar feelings. Particularly that vertical Face ID. I must be the outlier, but I bet if there was an app that tracked vertical vs horizontal usage my vertical usage would literally be less than 10 percent. So it would be surprising to me if Apple released an iPad with only vertical Face ID support. If they had to make the choice, wouldn't they choose horizontal? Either way, I think these rumors are off the mark on this one. I still say there's too much that we dont know or sounds strange, particularly the rear placement of a supposed smart connector.
