So reading the specs on Apple's site it looks like there will be a GSM only model and another model that supports CDMA.

I'm looking at doing the iPhone update program through Apple for the first time. I'm on T-Mobile so the GSM only model would work for me but I'd rather have the model that supports all networks just to keep my options open. Because I'm going through the program and being on T-Mobile will Apple send me the GSM only version? Curious what has happened in the past.

If you get one of the new phones with the dual SIM, I wouldn't think it would matter. You could also purchase the phone in full.

Well that’s odd. I have no idea why that would be the case. I thought that it was the same wireless chipset in all the phones and they’d all be CDMA and GSM compatible.

Where are you seeing that? Tech Specs pages list one model per size, no distinction between GSM and CDMA. For example: https://www.apple.com/iphone-xr/specs/

This year it is only one model for gsm and cdma. Read it again and you will see for USA there is only 1 model for each size.

Yeah, I think I misread what I found on the site. Single model number makes things much simpler and what I was hoping for.

I was screwed by this when I switched my iPhone 7 from AT&T to Verizon and had to buy a whole new phone... infuriating.

I think when you activate the phone with a cdma network, it can use cdma. else it wont
