So, I've decided i want to jailbreak my iPhone!

Right, I've had my iPhone now for about 6+ months and it seems the only way to get the absolute beat for a £400 phone is to jailbreak it.
I have the iPhone 3g, 16G and using the 3.1 update.

If anyone could provide a idiot proof guide for doing it would be great as the reason I haven't done it previously is because I'm worried about messing the lot up!

Couple questions for you clever people as I'm not the best with all the technical side of things...when I do succesfully jailbreak, how do I actually get all the brilliant stuff such as Bluetooth, video recording and all the rest? Also, is there a chance that if I did the jailbreak wrong I will conpletly mess my iPhone up and break everything on it.

Help much appreciated, thankyou!!

Go to iClarified and get a tutorial. Right now, you need a Mac to use Pwnage Tool 3.1

There is no idiot proof guide, it requires attention to detail.

Yes, you can lock your phone, but since you already updated to 3.1, you can just restore to official Apple 3.1 if need be.

Even a stock iPhone has bluetooth (settings/general/bluetooth)
Video recording (Cycorder from Cydia after JB)

Do you have a Windows PC, or a Mac?
 
With windows you need to get a pre-pwned ipsw if you want a JB 3.1. Theres loads floating around on the net.

Then you would place your phone into dfu mode and restore to the JB ipsw.

Or, as you have a 3g, you could downgrade to 3.0 and just JB it using redsnow.

Either way since you have official 3.1 you have an unlockable baseband and won't be able to unlock to use a different carriers sim.

If you want, I can upload my custom firmware. But you'll have to contact me via PM or something for the link, since I guess it isn't exactly legal.

You just need to shift-click restore and choose the custom firmware and it'll restore like a normal firmware, except once it's done it will have Cydia. Nice and easy.

Ahaha unless you get a 1600 error...then things get fun!
 
All this is way to confusing for me! Think I might just leave it an make do with my standard iPhone; I'll end up messing everything up!!

So any suggestions for someone who ended up with an error 1600???
I posted the info below to the carrier logo thread but, in searching for 'error 1600' found this recent thread. Hope you don't mind me cross-posting here...I'm getting desperate!

I had successfully upgraded my 3.0JB to 3.1JB but lost the carrier logo and decided to upgrade to 3.1 official as I have no interest in unlock. Completed the 3.1 restore and then went into DFU mode to restore with the pwned 3.1FW. However, I am now getting error 1600 each time! Searched the threads here and tried the following:

Used each of the 2 usb ports on the macbook
Restarted computer
Deleted files in ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support
Repwned the 3.1 FW and tried again
Tried to use 'restore' mode instead of DFU mode

Any suggestions???

I had been entering DFU mode by using an analog clock and holding the home/power x 10 secs then home only x 10 secs.
Decided to use the Pwnage tool's DFU mode tutorial and it worked without an error 1600!
Maybe my clock is fast/slow???
Anyway, I'm now on 3.1JB and restoring from a backup.

So I have an iPhone 3g 16 running the 3.1 software and was going to use redsnow and this tutorial to jailbreak my iPhone, but its says it's for 3.0. So since i have a windows pc and 3.1 I can't right? My brother has a Mac, is it possible for me to jailbreak on his Mac since a jailbreak is available for mac and then sync my phone to my windows pc? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I just started researching this jailbreak today.

You can use his computer to make a custom IPSW, or you can just torrent/download one off the internet, and restore to it through iTunes to jailbreak your phone.
