20 iMacs with Adobe CS2 Premium, 1 PowerMac G5 with a 20" Apple Cinema display and a projector, and a color laser printer. A great computer lab.

Best part of it is how hard it was to get our school board to allow us to buy Macs. Even after they agreed to the Macs, the IT guy with the school board came and ripped out the internet cable because he said that Macs on the network would mess things up...HOW IGNORANT! I unplug a network cable from a computer and hook it up to my MBP all the time, the network has never crashed! Any possible merit to this? All is well though, we have a internet cable hooked up to 4 PCs on the opposite side of the room, so I told my teacher that we should buy a wireless router so that we can file share, and maybe a student or some mouse would accidently plug in a network cable to the router.

Absolutely no merit to his claim. I work at a public library and we have a few Macs on the network. NO issues. At my uni, my Mac as well as a lab of macs is on the network. No issues.

They should fire that IT guy stat. That is sheer ignorance. That is not the kind of people they should be hiring. They should hire people with a passion for technology who are willing to help everyone regardless of platform.

Congrats to your school -- sounds like you folks will have a great setup for years to come. Do a lot of kids do design work? Do you have a dedicated computer design teacher?

Do you mind if I'm even more nosey (sp.?)? Is this for a high school? Public or private? How many kids? State or federal grant? Was it applied for by a teacher, administrator or IT professional?

Was that too rapid fire?

Sorry if I'm asking too much. Just that I recently saw the state of the technology in the school I'm starting at (as a teacher) and think I could do some grant writing myself, but really don't know where to begin.

What a nightmare he has to deal with now. Before he had to deal with errors in Windows, maybe Linux, Novell or whatever your network is running on. Now you add in Macs to the equation just means he will be getting less sleep than he already did.

I find this hilarious. I work in a school district that is entirely Mac and PC's are not allowed on the network. In the past when staff were allowed to connect PC's we had one with a virus that nearly brought down an entire circuit of our ISP's network. Word from the ISP was if we ever got a virus like that again they would just shut us down. PC's have been banned ever since.

How can adding macs to a network mess things up. Mac's use the same ethernet standard cable as a PC, and they can use TCP/IP. If he's an "IT Guy" then he should know that!!!!

Thats not the point he's paid to do that, it's just like adding more PCs to the network.

BTW I am not saying that mac's are perfect, just he's an "IT Guy" who hasn't got a clue what he's talking about. Whats even more annoying is people like that have jobs in IT, and i'm still looking!!!

He he. I worked at an isp many years ago. I was a mac guy back then too. I signed up like 25 mac accounts in like 2 months. When the support lead found out about it he blew a nut. I screamed at me for hrs and then.. here it comes... he called every single person who signed up with the isp and had a mac and told them that we didn't support macs and that their account was canceled. LOSER! Yeah, I got fired and they went out of business. Go figure.

You see anti mac IT guys are just like anything else. WHen someone gets really good at one thing the idea of change scares them to death and they will fight to the end to make it not happen. This is every IT guy who hates macs.

I work as a Networking Technician at my school and I know that having macs on the network would not effect it in any negative way... We have actually been seeing a large influx of macs on our campus, and being a Tech School who has been giving out Windows laptops to all incoming freshman, im glad to say that because of this influx and me talking to the head of IT there is a chance that Macs could be in a future years lineup. They are great machines. If this guy rips out the networking cable to the mac machines then someone should tell him to go rip out all the other non-windows machines cause Im guessing if macs are causing a problem which have a UNIX backend then all the other *nix boxes will be also...Its either a very ignorant employee or the worst networking equipment I have heard of....

That guy does not know anything about networking...

Yes, sure, the Macs shouldn't be a danger on the network. And currently, they're not. But before he can plug them in, he needs to have a recovery plan for if there is a Mac problem. And without that, he is actually being pretty sensible from a business risk viewpoint.

But he should be at least looking into that, rather than just burying his head in the sand and doing nothing.

Some of the old IT guys used to say if you go Microsoft you will never get fired. I hated it back then.

Today is much more open, but there are still limits.

Macs and PCs can co-exist on almost any network.

As someone else said that it his Job. I am sure there are kids there running Linux. I am sure there are some kids on campus with Macs, and they are in the network. There has to be at least one.

I don't know what errors you are speaking of. However, this IT guy simply said Macs being on the network would mess things up. What could a Mac could a Mac possibly do? Grab an IP Address? Oh no! The evil Mac is stealing IP Addresses!

I blame the IT guy. Information Technology means you should have a broad knowledge of computing systems. Especially at a college. Who knows what kids are going to bring?

Technology encompasses all facets. His blatant dislike towards Macs would alert me to the fact that this guy doesn't know very much. Sure maybe he can plug in a network cable and build a beige box of crap, but when it comes to a passion for all technoloy(which he should have) he is surely lacking.

At my school they have over 50 powermacg5's and adc displays and most of my teachers have g4 powermacs and ibooks while the computer teacher has a g5 and a powerbook. there supposedly upgrading all the computers again....... and we also have 3 smartboards : )...

we started out with just one GC (graphic communications) teacher, but the students' demand for the class was so great that they eventually brought in a second.

the whole thing was started by the first GC teacher, who had been a professor at a local college doing the same stuff. when our high school asked him to come over, he basically wrote up a "bill" of what it would cost to get the class going, and said he wouldn't consider the position unless they approved it and let him start it up right.

That's so awesome, I wish my school were like that. I went to West Van High. West Van is one of the richest areas in Vancouver, yet the public school systems' funds suck, it's pathetic. All the money goes towards the private schools. Not like it stopped me from my desire for web & graphic design, but it sure woulda been nice to have all those resources.

In the IT's defense, OS8ish era macs' AppleTalk could clog up PC TCP/IP. Though since I think 10.2 Appletalk has been turned off by default on all Macs.

My school uses three-year-old Dells with Celerons

It's actually much faster running Word through Rosetta on my MacBook Pro (which is pretty slow - I don't even use it anymore) than on the school's computers.
