It seems for me that every new OS release causes major sleep/wake issues where my machine will sleep for a few minutes, then wake, repeat ad infinitum. Reset PRAM etc may or may not work, then after several updates to the OS, the problem goes away. The only reason I notice this is due to hearing my raid box come on and go off. I guess it could just be bad luck, but am damned tired of this crap Apple. /rant

something specific to your mac, since this is not a common complaint. try running your mac for a day without the raid box.

check console... something is opening. check login items (in system preferences>users & groups). & reset the SMC.

if it's happening so much, it's an issue that you need to get resolved; it's not the OS, it's something else.

I had those problems pre Mojave and they are maddening. I’m still on Mojave. But one problem I had on Mojave was my Apple TV was waking my iMac. It took months but Apple responded to a bug report and told me to make sure the Computer app was not in the first row of apps on the Apple TV. It was and moving it out of the first row fixed the problem. This had to do with the Computer app trying to connect to my iTunes library.

I’ve had problems with getting tons of external drive disconnect messages after sleep cycles for the last two or three major macOS versions.

The takeaway is, I agree, Apple’s power management and sleep/wake is horribly buggy. I have lost faith in the quality of macOS. It has started to approach MSFT as far as I’m concerned.

again, these are not common issues, so they hardly define the OS. and, as always, getting help with an issue is far more useful than whining about it. just saying...

meanwhile, have you tried resetting the nvram, and, importantly, the SMC?

I'll try all of the standard checks (SMC, PRAM, pmset -g assertions, etc, making sure WOL is disabled) and try running without the attached raid. I have done all of that before, and the fix (for me) has almost, if not always been to wait on enough updates and the problem 'magically' goes away.

I have seen a number of complaints about frequent sleep/wake cycling (though I don't know the statistical significance/insignificance).

Also, any ideas on how do I know if the computer wakes improperly? As is happening right now, it wakes without turning the monitor on (MBPr and TB monitor) just the raid. The raid does not wake on it's own when disconnected.

what mac is this? and are you turning the raid box on when the mac's asleep? otherwise, am not an expert on this, so hopefully someone else will chime in...

MBPr 15in Late 2013. TB Monitor. Promise Pegasus2 R6 Raid-

haven't tried powering on the raid when computer is asleep as it requires an active thunderbolt connection to stay on - so it would just power back off anyway.

what happens if the external monitor is disconnected? what happens if the raid is disconnected? does the problem occur without these things? (and probably test that, one thing at a time...)

I’ve done all the troubleshooting one can do. How common this is neither you nor I know. Since it has been my experience across multiple macOS versions, iMacs and popular external hard drives I’m certainly not going to think the problem is rare.

google it. search these forums. i live here (sigh), and have not seen much about it.

rare or not, hope you resolve it. you say you've done 'all the troubleshooting one can do'; perhaps time to get outside help, or try the apple forums, or apple itself...

I have a similar problem. And for those claiming they aren't common problems...depends what you mean by common. There are a *lot* of threads about Catalina causing Kernel Panics. For some - like the OP and me, and others - it has to do with when the Mac goes to sleep (or you try to wake it). For others, it's because they're using external monitors or other external peripherals (like SSD drives for TimeMachine backup). For still others it's because they've replaced their HDDs with SSDs. Or some combination of the above! There are threads about each of these. Multiple threads in fact. Sometimes the thread titles specifically reference KPs, sometimes they say things like "issues with external monitors" but as likely as not the result of the trouble is KPs.

It's infuriating. And yes I've tried all of the things suggested here.

The ONLY thing that has worked for me is to prevent my Mac from sleeping by turning off all the Eco settings. Each night I reduce brightness to a minimum but that's about it. A terrible 'solution' to a problem that shouldn't exist, but that's all I can come up with. I'll keep trying with each new .update but ugh.
