I plan on going to the apple store and, after much thought and consideration, will probably end up buying a new 15.4" Macbook Pro. I've been reading about Macbook Pro horror stories, and have had horror stories of my own with iMacs, and have a friend who needed to exchange his macbook 4 times before getting a working one (vibrating, noise, DOAs, etc). The main issue about the new mbps is obviously the bottom 1/3 yellowing of the screen. Before leaving the store with my new mbp, I plan on checking it, because I don't want to have to go back to the apple store. I also believe that the average apple store employee is more "with it" than an employee at Best Buy, where they just don't care as much and will exchange anything.

When I bought my iMac and opened it up at the genius bar there was a red stuck pixel dead-centre in the screen, and I refused to take it home like that. They swapped it, but I honestly think if I came back the next day they would have given me a much tougher time.

I was at the apple store earlier today and looked at the mbps and didn't notice any yellow screens or flickering ones on any of the models. So in that sense, I don't really know what to be looking for. It's really terrible that I'm going into this purchase EXPECTING a problem, but that's what this forum has done to me lol. My plan is to boot up the mbp and then download a dead-pixel checker (although this doesn't seem to be a problem on the mbps). At the same time, I'll be able to check that the wifi works, and by flashing different colors on the screen, any yellowing should be quite obvious (right?).

Also, the mb and the mbp really are pretty much the same size. The mbp looked kinda big at first, but then I compared it directly to the mbp and the difference was very small, except the screen on the pro is way bigger, and not highly reflective. I was worried about the portability of the mbp, but I feel I am making a good choice.

Is there anything else that I should be on the lookout for?

I will report back any problems. All I want is a perfect machine, hopefully that will prove to not be too much to ask.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Well im getting my 2.2 mbp too today..i been thinking of trying it in the store as well...to check the yellowish in the screen and to check if all the keys are working..:)

Unfortunately, there is absolutely no guarantee either way. the key is taking your time to check everything (don't forget things like backlit keyboard, ports, sound, Superdrive), even though the Apple store with its harsh lighting and loud noise makes that really difficult.

I hope you get a good one!

Frankly, good luck getting one at all. They're out of stock pretty much everywhere. The guy at my store didn't even want to demo one for me because he awsn't sure when he'd actually have one to sell me. I'd be concerned with FINDING one at this point, never mind whether it was perfect or not.

Amazon has them in stock with free shipping and no tax. I highly recommend amazon and have pretty much always had a good experience with them. More hassle to return though since you have to wait for UPS pickup or take it to a UPS store, but it may be worth it if you need one now.

well since the OP said he plans on walking into an apple store tomorrow and buying one, I was pointing out that he might be surprised. Some stores haven't had any available for like 10 days. I personally am getting a blackbook which are easy to get.

Just call and reserve.

I went in and purchased one yesterday, first :apple:, didn't bother opening it in the store since there was just too little space to comfortably do it, took it back to my car, booted it up, no dead (that I noticed) or stuck pixels, and took it home.

Noticed no real problems so far, except for I don't think I'll be using OSX much longer, I had it crash / freeze on me at least four times in two hours, which I found to be a bit disappointing.

Only works if they have one to reserve. There's 7 apple stores within 2 hours of me and not one had a 2.2Ghz glossy for me to reserve. They told me to just keep calling every day until I got lucky. I decided it wasn't worth the hassle.

Yes, so true. NYC has had a mbp shortage for at least three weeks and when I asked yesterday when they'd get new ones the guy said he didn't know but that I can try calling on Friday to see. He said to just keep calling the two stores until I get lucky. Whatever! I ordered one from amazon and know that I'll have it on Friday. No fuss, cheaper and guaranteed.

There might be a problem then. OS X shouldn't be completely crashing or freezing like that; it could indicate a problem like maybe bad memory or something else.

I'd really recommend getting that worked out, maybe even getting them to replace the machine if necessary if it can't be resolved.

I wouldn't let this keep you from using OS X though; it isn't typical performance/behavior for the OS itself.

Crashing that early sounds like a ram access error. You might have bad RAM.

@feelthefire - That's actually quite ironic, I live in Colorado and when I called on Tuesday my preferred store had the glossy in stock, most of the rest did too. But on the next day they had a matte one and let me reserve it without issue.

I have a feeling it was more of a deal with having to do with the upgrades which were going on, but...

1) Tried to reinstall OSX (to remove the "not really crap but unnecessary"-ware, printer drives, languages, etc) and it froze up on reboot (just showed a black screen for 10 minutes), restarted it and it worked right off the bat.

2) Tried to update the iPod through iTunes, iTunes froze, had to force a quit on that, and had to restore the iPod to original settings and then update for it to work again.

3) Accidently hit the play button on the remote and front-row popped up, completely unresponsive (wouldn't move forward, back, close, or even be force quit), I could click "behind" it, ie when the mouse was moved to the top-right of the screen I would get the time and date popup on top of Front-Row, I couldn't figure out a way out of here so I rebooted.

4) Completely forgot this situation, had something to do with getting the WiFi to work.

None of the times actually had the OS freeze, but the original apple programs seem rather unstable.

Gotcha. I don't know, have you had any similar problems since then? I was thinking you must have if it was bad enough that you were saying you weren't even going to continue using OS X.

If you notice continued ongoing instability with both first and third party apps, freeze-ups, etc. I still think it might be worth getting some support on it. Generally speaking those apps shouldn't be freezing up/locking up regularly.

Well I used it for about two hours afterwards and it was completely stable, but I didn't really do much but surf the net, the reason I'm hesitant about using OSX is because I'm a windows guy (okay, some linux), and OSX blew my hyped ideals of an über stable OS pretty much right away.

I really hesitant about learning a new OS anyway, I'm not a total newbie to OSX, but I don't know if I have the patience to learn how to use OSX as effectively as windows. Plus, I'm a big fan of EVE (and other mmorpgs), so I'm going to be running XP regardless.

Fair enough. Sorry that you did have an initial bad experience; I've read of plenty of people who have switched from Windows to OS X and been very happy, but I can't blame you I guess for making a judgement based on the experience you've had so far.

All I can say I guess is maybe try and give it some more time though - from most of the PC people I know who have made the switch to OS X, once they have gotten used to it and various OS X specific apps, they are pretty loathe to go back to Windows except when they have to.

Personally I'm actually primarily a Windows user right now (because my current home computer is a Windows PC), but I still just don't like it as much as OS X, which is why my next machine most likely will be an MBP.

That definitely isn't normal. Put the first re-install disk and restart. Hold down the d button when you hear the start-up sound and it will boot from the hardware test and tell you if anything is wrong there. If there isn't and you are still having problems, I would take it into the apple store you got it in and see if someone at the genius bar can fix it.

Dude, frankly the forums overblow these problems too much. I was also freaked out getting my 2.4GHz 15inch MBP, and it ended up PERFECT. Don't be worried purchasing it at all. Just enjoy the great machine you'll have.

I went to my local Apple store. They didn't have the 2.2 in stock. I ended up getting the 2.4 and paying the $500 tax to have it today. Part of me wished to get the 7200 rpm built-to-order option online but I think I'll just wait until I can order a 250 GB 7200 rpm drive from another vendor when they are available and have it installed at an Apple dealer and just enjoy the slower 5400 rpm drive.

Very happy with my perfect Macbook Pro.

Nice to hear. What display does it have (LG or Samsung) and manufacturing week? Perhaps Apple has addressed the issues now?

My MBP that I bought on Monday at the Apple Store is also perfect (so far, knock wood, etc.), no yellowing in any way or kernel panics or anything else. It has a Samsung screen. Don't know the manufacturing week but I'd be happy to check if you let me know how.

Thanks everyone. I'll call ahead, but I'm pretty sure where I live there won't be any shortages...I live in Montreal, and I really don't think there is a demand for these 2000$ machines where I live. But thanks for the heads up. Ironically, I was just there yesterday, I should have asked, lol.

Ok, I just called the apple store. Just as I thought, they were "fully stocked". I do believe there are shortages though in the states...but where I live I knew there wouldn't be a shortage lol. Thanks for the heads up, though.
