Hi, in MacOS and Windows, we can create a project folder that holds all the files related to the project. The files could be created by Excel, Word, application1, applicataion2, etc. Given the way iPad OS's file system is made, we cannot do this? What options do we have if we want to organize files based on individual project folders?

I guess one approach is to work with apps that support the Files app, then write to a folder there.

One of the many reasons I use FileBrowser Pro as I want to centralize and co-locate files associated with a particular project.

That workflow is not something that iPadOS/iOS is designed to do. As others have mentioned, there are ways to work around those limitations, but there's always going to be that low-level annoyance because it isn't as straightforward as it could be given the current way you're doing things.

I suggest trying to "think different"... focusing on WHAT you need to get done rather than on HOW to do it.

I've had quite a bit of success with that approach when I wanted the iPad to be my primary mobile device for productivity. The time spent investing in researching options and alternative ways of getting tasks done paid off with greater productivity by switching to iPad-optimized workflows, less irritation because I wasn't trying to force the iPad to my way of working, and more enjoyment in using the device.

However, it was the need for "data-centric" workflows (which is what you're asking about) that ultimately caused me to stop pursuing the use of the iPad as a productivity device. But you may have better success in overcoming that than I did.

Try using cloud storage like Dropbox.

+1. Dropbox is usually natively supported by apps. Even before iCloud Drive/Files, that's what I've already been using.

Also, if one is primarily using Microsoft Office apps on iPad, then I assume one also has a Microsoft 365 subscription which includes 1TB of OneDrive storage.

That’s a seven year old article citing an opinion piece by Snowden with the official rebuttal even in the article.

Even if you’d believe that non substantiated claim then basically pick another cloud service provider of your choosing that has the privacy features you want.

This. FileBrowser Pro is easily the most versatile file manager for iOS. What OP wants to do is absolutely possible within the app.

This is a misconception. It used to be true, but not anymore for a good couple of years.
You can just make a folder, and put all your stuff in it, like you would do on a normal computer.

Also, you can let individual apps manage your documents by themselves, if you prefer that.

In my case, I tend to do a bit of both. In some cases I will like to let the app manage files for me, and keep it all inside it. In other cases I will want to have a project folder where I put all related files. In any way, both are possible and quite easy.

One caviat is - some apps are either not updated or unskillfuly programed, so there are apps that work bad with files app. Its up to developers to update those apps, in my case I avoid them, and find quality substitutes

Thanks. Where to make a folder to put related files in?

Thanks. I created “Project ABC” under Files->On My iPad. How do we move related files to it? I suppose if I just somehow move files created from different apps to this project folder, when these apps need the correspond files, will they get confused?

So, for an example how File Management is suppoased to work on the iPad take look at the App called “Pretext”, or lets say Numbers or Pages from Apple. This is how developers are suppoased to implement file management. As I said, not all developers have done so, and best course of action is to find quality subsittutes for apps that are not updated to work with a Filesystem properly. Or maybe write to developers and try and have them do so. Its certainly up to them to implement it properly - and not all have not done so.

What apps do you need to use?
