So what about the NEXT iMac?

I currently have a G5 (PowerPC) iMac, but I’m itching to upgrade. Whilst browsing the posts about the new iMac, the comment that stuck out for me most was when someone said, “More evolutionary than revolutionary.” What I don’t want to happen is to buy the new iMac and then have Apple introduce a brand-new generation of iMacs in 8-12 months.

What is your opinion on the future of the iMac? Is this the last update of this breed, and the next iMac will be a complete overhaul with leaps in design and performance? Or is the iMac pretty stable for the next 2 or 3 years, and we are likely to see only periodical minor tweaking (faster processor, glossy screen, slightly thinner)? In other words, would I be jumping on a dying horse if I buy this one? Before the press conference, I was expecting something a little more “wow” than the previous model. Was this a stopgap measure, and Apple has something around the corner, but it is not quite ready for production? If any of you have qualified strong guestimations about what lies ahead for the iMac, I’d love to hear them.

If we consider how tecnology is going, the next steps are obvious (not only for the iMac, but computers in general).

We´re gonna see blueray media, flash harddrives, full HD content as standard, cpus with more cores. These are the next obvious steps. Maybe we won´t see all in a year time, but we´re gonna see some.

If we think about the iMac, it can´t get thiner (can it? lol), the screens are as big as they can be for now, it has all the port conections they should put there, the harddrives have enought storage space, CPUs are fast, and the design is new (like it or not.. I´m not a big fan). We don´t have much to change right now, but some things come to mind right away: gpu, ram, glossy display, 1gb ram and the lack of blueray.

I don´t bet on a gpu upgrade because of the heat. People are saying these iMacs run really hot. What I must say is that was a little surprised that this last iMac didn´t had blue-ray (even if I don´t really care that much for now), so I bet it´s gonna be there soon, maybe January as a minor update (blue-ray and 2gb ram as standart, and maybe a matte screen option).


PS: I don´t think we´re gonna see multi-touch on Macs soon, at least on the iMac. Maybe we´re gonna see that on some kind of new computer (like that microsoft table pc), maybe on a sub-notebook.

I really cant see anything "revolutionary" coming to the iMac within the next year or so. Like others have said there are obvious update that will come with the life of the iMac but if you keep wait for whats around the corner you will never get one. A good rule of thumb is there is always somthing else coming, but can u really afford to wait for it?

Hmmm... the next iMac... a glass screen to me says, easy to clean, why clean it? because we will be touching it? maybe they are preparing for a touch screen? Just a guess, I can't actually see myself working that way.
