So... what did you guys go with as your email addresses for the iPhone?

I'm unsure of which email address I should use/get for my iPhone.

I currently have Gmail, but the way their POP works is horrible (you get spammed with your own emails... works great under Gmail's interface, works horribly with external email clients).

Or I can create a Yahoo! account. But that's yet another account, and I don't know if it's IMAP or POP? It does have push, though... but I don't think it's such of a big deal, 5 minutes is no biggie...

Or I can use my own domain (my .Mac membership ends today, and I'm going to open up an account at a hosting company, and get my own domain, tonight or tomorrow). Can I set up IMAP?

What do you guys think?

And also, what will you guys do?
 
I am stuck with gmail as it is my main email account. I also have my .mac account.

I left off my own domain emails because those get hammered with so much spam, and I havent taken the steps yet to clean it up yet and add the much needed filters.

With gmail I have set up a filter to archive emails from my email address and to bypass the inbox folder to try to skirt the self spamination.
 
I'm gonna stick with my GMail... As for the "self spam" issue I see some people affected with, it doesn't really affect me since more often than not I just want to check my email, and rarely need to send email from the phone itself.
 
Here's what I'm doing and it works great.....

Use your gmail pop account for Mail.app and everything else....

Then setup a yahoo account and forward all of your gmail to that account. Then, all of your gmail is automatically "pushed" to your iphone where you can read and delete it, but all your messages are waiting untouched in your mail.app inbox.


It's working perfect for me so far

Hmm that may be a solution to my problem. Thanks for the advice.

Is there any way you could post a screen shot of your filter? I tried setting this up but it seems not to be working. I set mine to be anything from my email address and ticked the box next to skip the inbox. Did you do anything else?
 
If y'all do end up deciding on another account, AOL offers free IMAP service. I've had few problems and very little spam from it. It has an okayish web interface, albeit nothing special. It works very nicely and has a large (2GB, I think) mailbox. It gets along well with Mail.app on OS X. I recognize that there is something deeply apocalyptic about recommending anything AOL does or offers in a forum thread, but there you go. :eek:
 
I setup an 'iphone @ mydomain.org' and also forward that to 'james.iphone @ yahoo.com". I am just waiting to find out how to get yahoo to push the messages.

It would be really handy if Apple made the 'check for messages every xx minutes' a setting per account instead of global. I have a business email I would like checked often, and have the others manual and the yahoo to push.
 
You know you can go into GMail's settings and tell it to only allow POP access for emails FROM NOW ON... totally eliminates the spamming problem.

Totally does not.
There are some threads all over the place with people who have tried that setting and it still doesnt work.
 
Im using my mac account and working out great...I just check the others but about to try it
 
BTW, I'm also using the Yahoo account -- it works the way GMail should. All changes on the phone are updated in real time on the web.
