iPhone So what happens if you OTA update a jailbroken phone?

So, when iOS 6 comes out...let's say I decide that I'd rather have stock iOS 6 instead of my current jailbroken 5.1.1. (Which, I wouldn't do for myself, but I may be transferring this phone to my wife when the new iPhone comes out).

If I just allow the OTA update through settings, what will happen? Will it just wipe out the jailbreak and I'll be on stock iOS 6? Would it leave all my Cydia apps as unusable space? Or, would it brick the phone and force me to do a DFU recovery?

I'm thinking if I can just do an OTA update, then reset all settings to set up the phone on my wife's account, it would be easiest, but I have no idea what that would do to the phone (I've only been jailbroken for a month).

Along the same lines, if I keep my 4S, and when iOS 6 comes out, if it can still be jailbroken with the same exploit as on 5.1.1, and Absinthe or Redsn0w is updated to JB iOS 6.0 right away, can I just update to iOS 6 OTA and then rejailbreak, or do I need to restore to 5.1.1, then update, then rejailbreak?

Sorry for the newbish questions, but there's a lot of information out there, but I'm not exactly sure whether you need to do a restore in iTunes just to unjailbreak your current version, or whether that also needs to be done when upgrading iOS.
 
I was curious about the same thing.

From what I have learnt with the last few updates, it just plain doesn't work. After the OTA is downloaded it will either say that it can't install, or it might install but get stuck in a reboot or something. I think the former is most likely though.

Just doesn't work, unfortunately. Maybe this could change once iOS 6 gets going and OTA really becomes a standard.
 
It fails. Stop your wondering now. There is no ota update on a jailbroken iphone/ipad, I even documented it for those who just have to see the error screen.
 
Thanks! So I guess the process is update via iTunes (does this need to be a restore?) and then rejailbreak if desired?
 
Common road to take is,

Backup.
Restore as a new iPhone.
Update to new firmware.
Re jailbreak using the newest exploit for the newest firmware or stay stock.
 
From my personal experience, it doesn't always fail. My jailbroken iPad 1 5.0.1 updated successfully OTA to 5.1
 
I can however say that the "reset to factory settings" function will simply crash your device if it's jailbroken.
