So what is the downside if I jailbreak my iphone?

Actually, If you restore the phone, then upgrade iTunes and install the new firmware... you will be able to upgrade. Your device will just have to wait on the Devs to rejailbreak.
Although I agree the subject has been talked to death here, I will say the only downside is just a tiny bit of lag if you install winterboard. I can honestly say I don't get lag if I don't have WB installed, but its worth the second or two lag that I get opening certain applications. The only other thing I can think of is it always, no matter what I have installed, makes my phone take longer to turn on.
That's pushing it.
Downsides are that lag can be caused by some applications (like winterboard and itelliscreen), and that it voids your warranty.
It something happens and you can't restore but your jailbroken, you are screwed.
Not to mention, if you are not computer literate, you can potentially mess up your phone and mac.
Sorry, that is true. But usually as long as you follow instructions, everything goes well.
And also lag most likely doesn't exist if you don't install those apps, but then whats the fun of that
i know this has been talked to death but why Jailbreak your phone.. is there better apps or something. I mean there are already a ****load that are legit... its all pretty darn confusing.. i must say!
Yes, but only if you bring it in jailbroken. As soon as you restore the iPhone to stock firmware, you're eligible for warranty service.
Right, and although my iPhone once got stuck in an continuious boot loop, its actually pretty hard to brick it. I just put it in DFU mode.
If you want to know about the benefits/downsides, I recommend that you just J/B it and see if you see any redeeming qualities or any slowdown that will bother you.

Yup, there are better apps! SBSettings give you toggles to easily switch various settings on and off without having to exist the app you are in so you can start the Settings app. Categories lets you organize your apps into folders, instead of having them in a disorganized mess over several pages on your iPhone screen. Appbackup lets you backup and restore data for your apps, one app at a time instead of the "all or nothing" backup scheme that Apple has. Just this week, an app came out that lets you stop Safari from downloading images -- convenient if you want to quickly load a page just to read the text. NeuvaSync syncs Google calendar with the iPhone calendar. None of these apps are available through the app store because Apple wouldn't allow them. And I've just listed the JB apps that I currently find the most useful, but there are many more apps like these, that add functionality and ease of use to the iPhone.
I must be honest here, and as much as I love my jailbreak, I've experienced a few problems. My main problems are more frequent app crashes, and apps taking longer to load. Also, my phone has frozen completely around 6 times so far Two of those times were this evening, from toggling Edge on/off whithin Safari. I'm not blaming jailbreak for it all, it could well be down to things iinstalled via cydia, but I do not exactly install every piece of crap I see
