As our 8 year old 1080p TV slowly dies, I am considering what to get to replace it. We use a '12 Mac mini as a home theater, and either stream off the internet or watch movies from a hard drive.

I could easily replace the TV with another 1080p for a mere $250, give or take, and wait for when (if?) apple updates the mini to handle 4K TV.

Or I could get a 4K TV now. The question is if I simply set the mini at a lower resolution (i.e. 1080 x 1920), would the TV still display the lower resolution? Or will the TV be too much for the Intel HD 4000 Graphics chip?

Thanks for any input!

I've been running a 2012 Mini on a 55" 4K Sony set for a couple of years without any trouble at all. The picture looks every bit as good as it did when I was running it on a standard HD set.
