I own a late 2012 2.3 Ghz i7 Mac Mini with 16 GB of RAM from OWC, and it's hooked up to a Dynex TV via HDMI. I'm running 10.10.3. I've done some reading, and it seems like some form or variation of this issue is a known problem for the Mini. The other day I was watching some videos in VLC and my Mini went to a static screen suddenly, then I heard the startup sound, meaning it had restarted itself. However, my video won't return until I hard-reset with the button in the back. This has happened once before on this particular Mini.
This is my second Mini, as the first one I had exhibited this sort of issue before it outright died on me (invalid volume, other errors, black screen). This is my first Mac. I've had this one for about a year now. What exactly is happening? Is this a crash? Is it an issue with the video card being overloaded? Some say the static is an issue with HDMI losing sync, but would that cause the Mac to restart as well?
